Sounds like that could be it. I may have to look into it. Shame it doesn't work for broodys. Every pekin i own is broody., Yep no one that isn't except the only rooster

I wonder what not. I have had broody silkie roosters, although they only last about a week, but tent to make good parents if a hen hatches more babies than they can cope with or gives up on them.
I've a few cockeral comming back to me next week so I hope the adopt my incubator chicks when they meet.

Hi Anniebee,Thankfully we do not have foxes and a very secure yard fence - unfortunately it is our darling fur girl, I grilled my husband with questions in disbelief! The feather girls have a designated fenced area,that has been further reinforced with success thus far. Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions.

So glad to know you don't have foxes where you are. And I hope your dog learns with training, to NOT touch chickens. !!

Not sure about advice about the electric fence. While they are handy ( at low intensity ) for cattle - even for sheep - a dog is a much smaller, finer constructed animal.

If one of those were to be used, it would have to be one that had the minorest, lowest possible shock value .... for the dog.

Note you have further re-inforced the fencing which is good - .... sometimes a second fence is a good idea ( but a lot of work and $'s ) .... 2 - 3 feet outside the main fenced area - and higher than the main chicken fence. A wild idea ... one meant to confuse the dog, and protect your chickens. Still think lock-ups at night are the only way to protect completely.

Re : the Anitone. ..... I have to tell the following with heart in mouth, in case I moz it all.

Mandy Welsummer ( numerous posts about her !! ) .... was on anti-inflammatories for 2 weeks. I then received the Anitone by post, and began with about 0.10 mls or a little less - increasing to - 0.15 mls for Mandy ( she is a little over 3 kg ) on a teaspoon of white rice and a teaspoon of fish ( tuna / sardines ).

As she tends to 'sit' ON her food in a dish ( Molly is banished at the time) .... I stay with her to make sure she gets all the benefits and to move the plate from under her. If however, I hold the plate several inches above ground she continues to stand to eat it. ... Still prefers to sit down and rest, to eat ground level tucker. ( I somewhat think she has discovered a way to have a lot of TLC !!!

) ....

She has improved a lot more, although still prefers the quiet of her night time bed to sit in during the day ( almost broody like ), - but her walking, her tail up and happy growling demeanour, is much better. She does not remain in her bed at all now, if anything is interesting, going on outside.

Today, ( wild winds then raining again !! ) she did not get the Anitone - I gave her a 1/4 anti-inflammatory instead. Just in case she might need it. The same way we don't take NSAID's or pain killers unless we have pain. She had displayed a little hesitancy in getting out and about - which is why I decided on that course of action. ....... Tomorrow she gets .10mls in the morning and .15 mls in the evening of Anitone and no anti-inflammatory. Vet said ok to give Anitone with anti-inflammatories if need be.

Mindy Araucana ( again heart in my mouth, so's not to moz the situation !! ) .... is getting strictly NO kitchen scraps, NO scratch mix, NO Mum's mash - and is forced therefore to eat her layer pellets and drink plain water. I removed the ACV from her water, as that apparently can have a deletirious effect on calcium in chook workings ???

She is still laying up a storm - the last 3 have been perfectly formed eggs. Stock and Produce merchant delivered the lecture on this ( she's been raising chickens for 30 years ) .... and so far it has worked ( hoping it continues ). If she begins to fade back to soft-shell - 1 dessertspoon of calcium powder in 2 litres of water, will help ( she said ).

However .... I rather think if that happens, I would give her Anitone which has a proper balance of calcium and Vitamin D plus all the other goodies., for animals and birds. Would soak a teaspoon of layer pellets to mush, and add approx. 0.05 mls per kg ( she's about 2.5 kgs !! ) to the mush. Hoping she would think she is Christmas. !!

For anyone else interested, I agree with Fancy .. it is an excellent product / pick-me-up for any animal or chicken ......... so far.

Good morning folks

Well, who knew that a male Koel [cuckoo] not only sings his mating call during the day but also at night? Something else I learnt this week. However, given a choice, I would prefer to gain additional knowledge during the day, not 3 o'clock in the morning!

I can not be angry with him though; who knows it could be Porter [for the newbies, he was a juvenile Kole who spent a couple of months in our back tree and still visits occasionally; beautiful fella].

Hubby is already outside with his laptop under the gazebo supervising free range. The girls are out early so that my son can get a sleep in, being the weekend and all and not having to work. Not sure why I worry about the gals waking him up though; I have no idea how he seems to hear them but not the Crows, Koels, Noisy Miners and Butcher Bird [Chucky] etc that started early morning
