Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hey everyone I have a question

What is the best Australian online store for poultry supplies?

That's great for Cuddles, I hope the hatch goes well :) My Beatrice isn't a super serious broody so I would never bother with eggs for her. How are the chicks from your last hatch doing?

Welcome RyanM :)

The chicks from the last hatches are doing well, I've sold a few but still have too many to actually count. One of them seems to be a real bantam instead of being almost oversized bantam that rest of the flock is.

Hi all, another aussie here from Victoria. Have not much experience with chickens but much to gain. I recycled my old dog kennel into a coop and built a fenced run, still a work in progress but my 3 love it so far.

Im sure ill see you around BYC cheers.

A big welcome to you, RyanM ... you will enjoy your visits here, I am sure.

My Mindy Araucana has laid 3 eggs in the past 36 hours or so.

Two were broken ( being brittle / fragile ) but whole. ... Little wonder at that. She is using up every scrap of calcium she has, plus what she hasn't got.

So I have to introduce two days of 3/4 shallow teaspoon of calcium to her - to help ( if needed ) .... she might ( hopefully ) back off laying for a couple of days now !! ... She does that on occasions, and then produces perfect eggs. The occasional calcium I give her, has helped ( I believe ) and certainly has not hindered her health in any way.

What the heill is going on with her ? Why would a chicken do that ? .... Anyone with any ideas ?

Mandy Welsummer has begun a moult - a more rapid one than normal for her, and I rather think Mindy Araucana is getting around to that as well. A few white feathers here and there. As normal Molly RIR doesn't moult until after the other two - there is no sign of it with her - yet she lays no eggs ? Hasn't since last April. I think she's run out of them !! but still squats.

The moulting is very very early. Hoping it means an early Autumn ??

... how wonderful that would be, here in steamy, humid Victoria.

Meantime, it means hard times for my chickens, especially Mandy. Just hoping she can survive a moult, with the weird gait she has - although she has been walking normally these past few days - much more than before, and still eating up a storm. Weird is not the word.

Just have to wait, hope - and see. ....

Cheers -
