Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi all ... I have a couple of - um - questions .... and not sure if I want to hear the answers. Many many pages back, I mentioned that one of my two big girls ( Molly RIR or Mandy Welsummer ), had laid what I thought was a fairy farty egg. It was with some woopsies. Today I found another 'thing' ( again with fairly fresh poop ), was more or less oval, solid but soft with a couple of gross looking 'feet' on it which fell off when I picked it up. Was a cheesy colour like the first. I am now thinking it is a lash egg ( as was suggested by Fancy and I think agreed with by Satay for the first one weeks back ). Using rubber gloves and a mask :sick and doing a lot of :caf ... I cut it open to see if there was anything else inside. Just one tiny thing found - in the centre - a pinkish spot. Nothing else formed - it was solid but soft enough to cut easily.

The problem is I cannot be absolutely certain who has passed it. Top pick is Molly, as Mandy has been laying eggs - but mostly not the usual colour of a welsummer egg. At times she lays an almost terra cotta colour, but her sprinkler has gone bung. So there are very few if any, darker tiny brown spots on the eggs ( when she was young they were all perfect ). I know they are hers, as she purrs while laying, and I pick them up almost immediately she has laid. She has also laid eggs that resemble more like Molly used to lay, ( pinkish ) and I did think Molly had laid at least one egg. I am now doubtful about that. All my 3 chookies squat and submit. Mindy who lives alone laying blue eggs, is prolific - and it certainly isn't her. It is a real puzzle. I am also wondering if it could be something from the bowel ???

Anyway, - one big girl most likely has had ( probably for some months now ) and has still got maybe salpingitis, and I believe that at later stages anti-biotic will not help. All girls are well, eating and drinking well - Molly is fully of energy. Mandy still falls over her big feet and flaps around, sits a lot and trills a lot. Mindy is - Mindy - never quits talking. AND from the time laying recommenced ( late September ) we have eaten the brown to pinkish eggs regularly. I read on-line that eggs from a chicken with salpingitis shouldn't be eaten - and I freaked out completely. Still and all, we are not unwell from eating the eggs ... most of them are eaten by Neil anyway. ( loves his eggs ) and he's ok.

The 'deposit' described was about 1 inch long and a 1/2 inch thick.

Anyone with any ideas about this ? .... what on earth do I do.

Would very much appreciate any advice.

Cheers ~~

Hi everyone I need some advice. I have 3 Cayuga ducks they are 10 weeks old, I think they are all female they all seem to be quacking. I now have 3 ducklings that are 2 weeks old. I would like to put them in together in a few weeks, I need to know if it possible and how do I go about it? Thanks

DE has been linked to respiratory problems if inhaled but I think it's pestene that you are thinking of with the Parkinson's link. Rotenone is the culprit. I don't use DE because anything you dust chickens with will invariably end up in your lungs and theirs. If you choose to use DE , be sure it's food grade and avoid inhaling it.
Don’t Like the sound of it!

Fancy do you use Pestene, I have some and I'm worried about using it now. If so how do you use it. Thanks
I no longer use pestene I found that it would get into my eyes and it really is nasty stuff.
I've told you guys about Spinosad in the past and Yates have now replaced the rotenone, (that's the nasty stuff in pestene ) with spinosad. The tomato dust contains sulphur , (the other active ingredient in pestene ) , spinosad and copper sulphate. There are also several pyrethrum products on the market.
The beauty of Yates tomato dust is that it not only contains the newest age insecticide on the market, but it's only $10 .

Thanks so much for the info. I do remember you saying something about it before and I bought the yates. But I have some pestene here and I wasn't sure if it was safe. Maybe I will use it under the slabs away from plants and animals. Hopefully it will stop the mites from breeding in the sand.

Could it be a lash egg? I can't put a link here but google lash eggs and see if it looked like that.

When i had ducks i would put them together at night and then watch them for the next few days to see there was no problems. Ducks can be a bit bitchy so keep an eye on them for a few days.
