Hi All,
I am in Melbourne and have returned to hatching chickens to keep sane during lockdown - didn’t know lockdown would last so long. On to my third incubation. I incubated and kept chickens when growing up but only just returning as an adult. Just hatched backyard mixes to start with but looking to try some heritage breeds now I am back in the swing of it. Only incubating very small numbers. Have already learnt a heap from reading this thread - thank you

Looks on track for the 10 year floods down here that's for sure. These next 6 weeks are ment to be the start of it

We have finally had a lovely 110ml of rain this week. Some wild storms in the mix too all over se qld but thankfully we have been ok.

i have 3 baby marans chicks at the moment, Threw a few eggs under a broody pekin and she hatched 3. Fingers crossed for a girl or 2 in the mix.

There have been some nasty storms! Devastating seeing crops wiped out only afew hundred kms away. Fingers crossed ours stay strong and we can get some grain back in storage

So good to hear about the rain. The storms and hail sound intense. Hope you continue to get some rain but no more storms

My fingers are crossed for you. Australia doesn’t appear to have a happy medium anymore. It is either drought or storms and floods. Really hoping you get a great load of grain in

I am candling my latest lockdown incubation tonight - day 7. The interesting thing is that with lockdown restrictions easing slightly in Victoria I don’t want to stop incubating!!! I am enjoying it and the new arrivals so much!!! I think this activity will continue. Unfortunately being in the city I can’t keep a rooster and incubate my own eggs. Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy

Yeah it seems to be, the taps on full blast or not on at all doesn't it? How fun is hatching? Quail are good for intown when you want fertile eggs of your own because they are considered an aviary bird. And my goodness the cutest, tiniest chicks! (Sorry, I'm an enabler )

THANK YOU!! I asked my husband about quail and he thought we couldn’t have them with chickens!!! I love your enabling. Do most people keep them in with chickens or do you keep a separate aviary? Now I get to research and I love the research too

Keep them Seperate. You can keep both just not run them together as thats how they can spread illnesses to each other and quail get hurt by bigger birds. I have courtnix quail, and body wise they are same size as my 7 week old wyandotte chicks but the chicks legs make them taller then the quail. I think quail are the most interesting birds we've had because everything happens so fast! I also have ducks (and know people who keep them in small cities) but if people think roosters are loud they've never heard a pekin duck! Haha I love my ducks but no way I could live with them in the city
