Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Wow Satay, two black ones? That's awesome :)
Chook, I read a theory somewhere that said eggs can benefit from a cooing down period as often as once a day because he a chicken were sitting on them, they would get up to eat etc. Glad you still have some wiggles :) what day are you on? Also, I meant you could have some Chicks free too :) or, my beautiful pair of Cuckoo looking Araucana crosses from ash need a nice home :)

This may be a silly question but, is there any way to tell the age of a chook? The breeder said my houdan were seven months but they're not laying and the roo has only just started to crow. Also, one is very small. I'm thinking they're younger than I was told.

Yep 2 black marans. Can't remember what you said they could be. The rest are wheaten.

I need a bit of advice.

I was given my 2 Light Sussex hens about 3 months ago. I'm unsure how old they are, but they are definitely mature hens.
My issue is that neither of them have laid an egg at all and are basically free-loading haha.

I'm torn between keeping them and seeing if they lay when the weather warms up, giving them away/selling them or possibly eating them.

I really need to stay away from Poultry sites as I've just put an enquiry in on a Coro Sussex pullet. I can very easily replace the LS, but part of me wants to give them a chance at laying.

TORN!!

I'm not sure about light Sussex but a lot of breeds do stop laying in winter. Case in point of got seven hens/pullets a d getting one egg every couple of days. Sigh. So may just be the cooler weather.

How do you guys do staggered hatches I have some (4) ara eggs due to go into Lockdown tonight but there are also 9 minorca Eggs that aren't meant to go into Lockdown until Sunday, the day after the ara are due. I can take the rails out, take it off the tilter thing and hand turn the minorca, or would that jeopardize the humidity for the ara? How early is too early to stop turning?

Personally Pinky i would not do a staggered hatch in the one bator for the reasons you mentioned. The minorca's will still need turning while the arac's are in lockdown. Maybe others have done it and could give you better advice but i would not do it. I guess as you already have them in there you will have to either leave them so you don't ruin the humidity of the ones in lock down or take the chance in ruining lockdown by turning the others. Staggered hatchers usually use one bator til lock down then transfer to another for hatching.

I only have 3 sussex left and they are not laying right now. I would think they should restart after winter.
