Hi all.

I have a minor issue, I dont think my AustrolorpX hens are laying. I know its winter but not once have I seen them
sitting to lay.

The three production reds are and I have seen them sitting to lay nearly everyday. From 5 hens I am only getting 2-3 eggs daily.

My lorps were 13-14 weeks when I got them in march (3rd) so are 25weeks roughly

Any Ideas ?

I let them free range every afternoon and kids / dog dont bother them at all.

I have a lot chickens. and am getting maybe 1 to 2 eggs a day at the moment.

I have at least a dozen ducks of laying age and not a single egg!!! I was given some eggs to hatch last Saturday though.... lovely green tinted eggs that came from a pair of ducks that I gave to a friend. All ten look somewhat like this

I cant wait to have babies in the house again.

The only way to reliably get eggs through winter is to use a light on timer,
so the chooks get an extra couple of hours of light before dawn.

I hope where ever you are around the country you are somewhere warm tonight!! What a day it was in Melbourne!!! First thing I did when I walked in the door from work was turn on the heating..I think it will stay on throughout the night for the first time this year.

Raining and cold today here but not too bad. Sunday night we are meant to be -3c over night ... and I don't own a heater lol. Do have an electric blanket though.

thanks for the comments.... I'm not going to use a light - I don't like interfering that much into what is 'natural' to any animal.

way too cold for me.. I added extra bedding to the coop to warm it up and black plastic and boards to stop the wind !

I hear McKay had a tornado today and Melbourne the coldest May day on record !

YES and I cant wait!!!!!!!!!!! I am even looking foward to the drive up there- Started going through all my cds tonight so I have heaps of good driving music. I think I may even pack my bags tomorrow since the weather will be keeping me inside. I sent off an entry form today for some photography I wanted to enter into the art display, so i have to finish framing them and pack them up well too.

I didn't hear about the tornado. Is mckay somewhere in Melbourne? Rain has stopped this morning but it is freezing cold. The winds are suppossed to pick up today too. We are off to our local country show today for a few hours as long as son wakes up ok. Spent 7 hours at the local country hospital yesterday as J (my teenage son) hit his head at school and got bad concussion. Seemed ok last night before bed so hoping he will be fine this morning. Hope eveyone stays warm
