I've just put 9 RIR x Araucana eggs from my own rooster and hen under my broody RIR bantam (her first time) due to hatch just after Christmas.

Also getting 2-3 Runner ducks after Christmas, I've only heard great stuff from these ducks- Great for beginners, wont fly away like other ducks, low fencing will keep them in, good egg layers, very rewarding and you dont even need a pond or pool just a bucket of water deep enough for them to wash there eyes and nostrils in, but I've got 3 pond of different sizes so they'll be able to have a swim about.
Does any one know though if ducks lay before dawn I've only heard this once form a BYC member and wasn't entirely sure???

I have runners, muscoveys and khaki campells and I find all of mine lay before dawn. I am not sure if that is true for everyone with ducks but seems to be the way mine are. I have 2 baby runners at the moment. Pure white and they are the cutest things. Runners are up there with the best of the egg layers. Mine lay like hot cakes. They are not all that friendly though more standoffish but they have great peronalities. Mine love to swim. In fact in this heat that seems to be all they do. They don't fly which is a bonus for people with smallish yards too. if you wanna see some fantastic examples of runners ask ducky to post some of pictures of her's. She has beautiful runners.

"Mine lay like hot cakes". Hope mine do to. I want Khaki Campbells as well but just cant find any one who has them down my way, later this year if the Runners go well i might get some hatching Khaki Campbell eggs of you if you sell them???
Can you give me a link to ducky's Profile so i can ask her to post some pictures.

gday aussies
i just joined i have 3 isa browns and 1 Australorp chicken
1 of my isa's (Pecka) became very broodie the other week and so i sourced some fertalized eggs for her to sit on...they are due to hatch this weekend...
what do i do if we are successful with 2 new babies just leave Pecka to take care of them as she naturally would or do i need to seperate them and have the chicks under lights?
