Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

This is probably a really stupid question, but - if you have access to broody hens why would you use an incubator? Are the chicks more tuned in to humans and therefore more manageable? Is it a convenience thing or better percentage in the results?
I must say I would love to see what is going on (having only ever hatched once with a broody and in no way could touch her) rather than just listen for the peeps and wait for Momma to show me in her own good time.
Just curious really. I caught myself looking on e-bay for incubators then thought - but you have a really good broody hen, you just need to wait for her to finish raising this hatch and go broody again!!
Doh!

I use an incubator more times than broody's. For the quails they don't sit so incubator is the way to go. For chickens I hatch I do a mix of breeds at a time so I will have some under broodys and some in the incubator. LIke now I have 2 eggs in the incubator that were started under a broody (6 eggs).3 went missing I think a snake got in there and I put them in the bator til my quails eggs were due to hatch last week. I took them back out and back under the broody. 1 more egg went missing so when the quails were done I put them back in the bator.

For Pinky.. I have a pip on one of the 2 eggs from you :)

Some broodies are brilliant mothers and never lose a chick, others lose them, bury them. let rats eat them etc.
Plus you can never be sure you will have a broody when you need one.

The incubator is always there when you need it.

I have not noticed much difference in socialization between broody raised and incubator raised chickens.
I think broody raised feather quicker because they are always in changeable temperature conditions.

There we go Pinky one out of 2 out so far. Can't see any movement on the other one yet but it is a day early so we will see how we go.

Hello!
Congratulations!
I haven't been here for a while (all the conversations move so fast!) but for those in Sydney I am on the Northern Beaches - about ten ks away from Manly... I have three silkies, and four 'big' girls, a golden laced wyandotte, rhode island red, a mix of some sort and a silver Campine. I love my girls, they are hilarious. One of my silkies runs up to me and shouts at me - she crows but lays eggs as well. Too cute!
Is anyone else on the Northern Beaches and if you are in Sydney what vets do you recommend? I have a good one but when he is away I get stuck...
Cheers!
