Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hey Sam; most of the quail went for $2-3 each. They were all sold in lots, not individually, and there were only 5 or 6 lots. There were a dozen quail eggs sold, but they only went for $1 and they didn't look too fresh (some were broken and others had dirt on them so I wasn't even tempted to bid.)

I only have room for a few (my temp cage for them is 2ft by 6ft and 2ft tall) so I stuck with my cage of 7. My male is actually okay, not friendly but is totally indifferent to me. The box that had the quail had some quail eggs in it, so I threw them in the bottom of my bator and I'm hand turning them (I'll be very surprised if I get any hatching because I think whoever sold the quail threw them in to make it look like they were laying heaps).

Here are the Pigeons!

They are in with the quail for now, and they actually seem to be getting along fine. I have an extra two food containers in (like with the other poultry) to minimise fighting, but there hasn't been a single peck that I've seen. My quail are next, resting under the pigeon holes that I threw together this morning.

As you can see, some have the feather loss of severe over-crowding (one in particular you can see her entire back). Again, I've seen no pecking amongst my quail (not once, weirdly enough) so maybe I just haven't gotten any of the trouble makers. I'm fairly certain I have a male in there because my whitest quail has no feathers missing on top, but a few missing under his breast-bone. Sam, let me know if I'm just making this up as I go along, because I have no idea what I bought and I'm actually just guessing. I had a single egg in the run this morning (I've only had them in there for less than a day) and it was from a pigeon. Now here comes the close up;

And now we have TURKEYS! Aren't they lovely? Pinky is the one closer to the camera, and The Brain has the slight lavender pattern on the wings.

Lady Muscovy and one of the Appleyards.

And here is one of my $1 Plymouth Roosters. They've been causing trouble with the rest, but it calmed down a little after Pinky (the Turkey) went nuts at one for being peck one too many times.

And here's a not so great picture of my quarantine pen. It's roof is covered with chicken wire and you can just make out the roosts up the back.

OH! I forgot to mention the young Light Sussex. I have two that I bought for a friend;

If you have any advice for me, or a problem with how I've housed my birds, let me know so I can do my best to keep them happy and healthy

Only advice I can offer on the quails is that the males will crow - call out whatever you want to call it as they mature. Once they are 6-7 weeks old if you turn one up side down you will find a vent hole and it you press gently either side of the hole if it is a boy a white liquid will come out if not it's a girl. Girls will have a more swollen vent as well.

Love your turkeys too. I just love mine they are the best free rangers. I have 2 males and 3 females and a few babies right now and I can find them anywhere on our 6 acres. They go out as soon as I open the door in the morning and go back to bed just on dark. Turkey meat tastes great too.

Wow, they are nice looking birds (I know people don't usually think so, but I like Turkeys).

I've almost finished my Turkey coop. I started it because I've got some Turkey eggs in the bator (though they all had moving air cells so I'm not sure how they'll go) and the new coop alongside my car port is almost done. I'll be free ranging mine too, and I hope they are as well behaved as yours. What sort are they Satay?

I have no clue except the carmel ones are bourbon red so I have been told. I like them too the boys big g and little g are so protective of the girls and their babies but such gentle things. They are actually free ranging in the pics the corro fence you can see is the outside of their night pens. I just managed to score them being up near their pens when I went to take the pics. Forgot to add they live with the bantams. They had their own separate night pen but would have none of that and kept insisting on going in with the banties at night lol Funny things.
