I can relate to the turkeys getting in to my girls' coop and then flapping around .... it was quite funny when I was yelling at them and I must say, spraying water with my $7- target water pistol, but they just couldn't find the way out. So I had to calm down to help them out - or they wouldn't have got out. I live in north-western Sydney

Thanks for saying about the mint and bush rats - I didn't know that - I will go mad with mint now too.. Unfortunately the rats like the coop as well as the p[ossums and the turkeys ...

Someone asked about wormwood? I found some in Bunnings in a little multiherb pack of seedlings. It's still growing.

Just check the wormwood from bunnings. Bthe stuff ours had said wormwood and then in smaller print "Danish" or something like that. Then on the back in fine print it had "looks just like wormwood". So there are two types and the nursery where I've ordered mine from said the Danish or whatever it was isn't true wormwood.

If so, Have you ever heard it being used with chickens?

Who else is getting drenched! This is day three ! My yard is becoming a mush pit and I am going to let the girls out as their coop is mush ! Maybe Ash can answer but anyone ? Do chickens have feet issues like humans with too much mush or wet ground ? For long periods ?

I'm in Sydney Australia and my chickens will have to learn to swim if the rain continues fortunately I have a section in my coop with pavers... At least if they stand in that they are out if the mush.. I'm not sure if they get feet problems from being wet constantly but it's pretty mushy
I also added to new members to my week old flick yesterday, so we have a little peck order dominance happening out there...
It suppose to rain for next few days here, so hoping I don't have to build a boat

Warrigal Greens (aka Native Spinach and NZ Spinach) is a native to Oz and NZ and is a sprawling salt-tolerant perennial which spreads well and also generates very effectively from seeds. It's really rather tasty, but like perennial spinach, is high in oxalates and needs to be blanched and rinsed before consuming. For this reason, I have it in my fenced-off veg patch (where the chickens can't free range) and rarely give them the odd leaf from it. They do like the prolific yellow flowers, which have less oxalate and I throw some out for them once in a while during the summer.

I actually have no idea whether oxalates even affect chickens - just being cautious and following the principle of giving them what only I would personally eat.

Silverbeet is the easiest green to grow for chooks. I have a whole garden bed of it and it self seeds so will last for years. They love it.

Chooks can get sore feed from too much water/mud, or their feet can be caked with dried mud making walking or perching difficult. - it wont happen in 3 days I shouldnt think.

Now you tell me - sigh have just come inside from planting english spinach seeds in front of the chook pen. Oh well hopefully they will leave some for us . Maybe I better plant some more further down the yard just in case.

When we had chooks years ago their coop wasn't very waterproof (part of our ongoing water issues) and it was pretty much a mud floor all winter. One reason its taken us 10 years to replace them was I refused to walk through mud to get eggs again so I said no more till that's fixed. It never seemed to bother them too much. May be a bigger issue if you were in a colder area though than us. Can't imagine its good for them but we got away with it so a weeks rain shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks! My neighbor has heaps of this stuff and was going to give me some. Thanks for the other name, I have an article that says New Zealand spinach and other plants are great to grow for you and your chickens, so was getting confused when she said warrigal green as the article said nothing about it.
The article says nothing about how much to feed them but the Warigal green is part of the list of greens to grow for your poultry.

YES!! Well at least the tanks will get a fill up.

Chicken have scales. For this reason I think that the mush and wet would not affect them, although if they get a cut on their foot in this weather 9 time outta 10 they will get bumble foot. So make sure no nails, glass wire of sharp things are in the run as to try to eliminate this problem
