Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks everyone for your help with my chook. I'm not in Sydney but rather a few hours down the coast unfortunately.

I'm still baffled but from colourfuls description starting to doubt its cocci. If anything she seems slightly better tonight and has eaten two large birdcage seed holders of food today and gone through one of water. By the sound of it were it cocci she should be almost beyond it by now. Oh and no further diareah at all today so that's improved from yesterday as well.

I'm going to treat them all with the medicine anyway as it says it helps them build up immunity so can't be a bad thing. But I'm at a loss to the problem. Guess we see what the morning brings and hope its just lots of little thing such as change and diareah and feather plucking combining to exhaust it and a bit of rest might be all that's needed.

Luke, how's the wormwood going?

It's going...O.K. I put it in, with the honey as appps suggested. Gave it a good watering but it has started to wilt. It isn't dead and has been about 1 week but it is just all floppy.

To me that is great news. Cocci scares me so much.
Just treat them with the cocci stuff. Don't treat for everything all at once as this could be disastrous.

Hmm, are they just in the ground or in a pot? I think it doesn't like too much water. It's probably fine and just putting all its energy into growing roots hopefully.
When I originally got my cuttings, I put some in pots and carefully tended to them and they all failed but the ones I just stuck in the ground grew to the great big bush I have now. :p

Deb, yours going ok?

Yeah I have just put them in the ground in a small brick framed veggie patch to keep the grass out. We are having more rain so I hope it doesn't kill it.
Will just have to see how it goes.

Ive had a thought, Im wondering if the guy changing the chicks from chick starter straight onto layer pellets may have caused something like rickets which would explain the tired or weak legs.

I found this on another thread. It is better to switch to a grower after 4-8 weeks if you are able. And higher calcium levels in younger birds can cause bone problems...most notably, Rickets. 18-20 weeks is usually a good time to start on layer feed. (or at onset of lay

If the weird bloody poop was just an intestinal lining poop and so taken out of the equation then this could explain why an otherwise healthy seeming bird is wanting to sit all the time.
Signs

Lameness.
Hock swelling.
Soft bones and beak. - sometimes
Birds go off legs.
Poor growth.
Birds rest squatting
Or lay on their sides unable to stand
Reduction in bodyweight.

I should have taken more notice at the time but I did notice the birds he had sitting on the roost were all sitting funny, sort of squatting right down on it. I just figured at the time it was a breed thing and they just sat funny. Now wondering.
