Thanks for the advice, guys! The girls we've had have been great layers, and we were using the eggs in the preschool as we provided meals up until last year, when the government closed down the kitchens in preschools across NSW. Now we have quite an excess of eggs, especially since I don't take them home any more. Some of the teachers won't take them home because the hens look a bit manky, which is just plain weird...I guess they've never seen the state of the hens providing eggs for supermarkets!
I guess I'm trying to say that I don't really mind if we have hens for looks rather than laying. The opportunity to re home an ex factory hen or two appeals to me, but as I'm only at school three days a week, I can't guarantee I could give them the care they really need to get back on their feet. I'll have a look on the hen rescue site and see if it suits the situation. If anyone comes across any other breed in the Sydney area that might be appropriate and not too pricey (the school has no money, so I'm guessing it will be a meg donation) please let me know. The chooks have been a fantastic thing to have in our school. We are VERY inner city, catering to some quite disadvantaged families, and the opportunity for some kids to care for our girls has been really game changing for some of them. It's going to be a sad day on Wednesday when they find out one lady didn't make it. :(

Our school has a little stall that they run every couple of weeks at pickup time. They sell the parents eggs and things like rhubarb and spinach etc. the kids do the selling and love being so important :)

The money raised goes back into the school garden program.

Why not get the kids in on picking a new breed? Get them involved in researching which will fit your schools needs. Could be a good teaching experience :)
