Hi all
Any advice for a sick chookie?I just thought my White leghorn Lizzy was moulting and was completely naive until yesterday when I suddenly realised that this was WAY more than moulting - she has patches of bare skin - looks almost plucked in places poor little thing. : ( I'm embarrassed to say this - I really do care for them but just didn't see it. And places where there sre spindly bits and bare patches on her wings. She's really distressed if I pick her up. I am taking her to my vet first thing in the morning - but just wondering what experience you've all had?![]()
My other 2 are ok. Yesterday I did see them peck at her so I was worried - but today they seem to have been protecting her (or is that my wishful thinking?) They are really used to being together so I just don't want to think of the c... word.
Thanks sss
Hi allHi.
I can only think of 3 things that cause feather loss.
Mites and lice. I would check her for those.
Pecking from your other 2. Chicken are "smart" well ish. They could just be doing it while you are not there. It can get pretty bad. I would watch for blood.
Rooster. Do you have a rooster? If so he might be just getting a bit to keen on you WLH.
Good luck. Hope the vet can fix it.

PS I should also say - albeit exp, my vet is also an extremely good vet!

Hi all
Sorry not to get back to you earlier - I took Lizzy to the vet on Monday, it's now Friday. He's a very expensive vet and I could have said no to everything, but she's a bit like one of my children!!
I don't have a rooster and on Saturday I saw the other 2 occasionally peck Lizzy, but on Saunday it was like they were protecting her - it was really strange. I've never had pets before, buttheir behaviour was really noticeable.
It wasn't mites - or it would probably have affected all 3, and I couldn't see anything.
The vet did an x-ray (!!) and there was cloacal swelling and it ended up infection there and in her stomach. And he did a blood test ( my pay packet went for the week) - but it was like a detective show. She was low in Calcium and protein - which meant that she had been digging around in the dirt too much, eating too much dirt causing the cloacl problem and severe stress moult. There was also some other infection which tends to come from water lying around - perhaps with poops or sewer.
So why did she Lizzy dig in the dirt like this? It came back to about a month ago when I started trying to cut back on all the 'treats' I was giving them, and just go back to their layers mash ( baracourts? + some other seed) Cos they didn't want to just eat this they protested and scratched up my grass - which they've never done before - heaps of dirt, as well as some dirt in a garden I let them dig in. This was around the time it rained heaps and heaps - hence the water, and the grass was more water logged than the garden, so they scratched the grass, wrecking lots of it. The vet said if there are possums around their droppings will affect the water. The possums use the tree over my chooks'coop to come up and down at night - so that makes it worse.
So solution - the vet said he wants to increase their calcium - HiCAL and kale cabbage and figs. And also he put together a diet based around rice and veges and some of the seed I give them whcih should be completely balanced, so he said I don't have to force them to eat their mash. This rice etc won't be super expensive I don't think, and shouldn't be too hard to prepare regularly - I hope - and I just give that to them each morning, and then they can still graze on their mash, as little or as much as they want to.
And I managed to feed Lizzy an antibiotic tablet today - 5 more to go. I didn't think I would have success. So I'm quite happy about that!
So sorry for the long post - but that's the story.... Hmm.. I think some people think I do too much for my chooks, and on one hand, yes.. On the other, they are special.
Thanks for your interest, a very relieved SSS
That's not the one you want Luke. Though it will do them no harm it does not have any of the good stuff in it. You need to get the one form the health food isle.
