Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

The rusty red feathers on the chest suggest he is a boy. Funny, I cannot sex my own 6 week old ones! No obvious colours on their chests yet. And vent sexing was just too hard :-(
Anyway, I am not an expert in sexing quails, just what I found on the net.
How do you find the quails so far Luke?
Try catching some grasshoppers and feeding them to the quails - very entertaining!
I feed them some worms from my composting worm farm sometimes too, just as funny to watch! chickens get them too of course.
I am trying to breed mealworms, but not very successsful yet. Still alive and well, but not multiplying - have not seen any beetles yet.

Oh, O.K. yeah they are alright. I am just keeping my distance from them as I don't trust what they have yet and don't wan to risk my chickens getting it!
I will give them some Meallies tomorrow. I have a HEAP! SO MANY! But it's winter so they will not be multiplying. You will have to wait till Winter ends.

Satay, you mentioned before you got some quail eggs from someone in Brisbane, I wonder if we got our eggs from the same source? I bought them from a guy called Brent in Ferny Grove.
Hmm Brent.. Don't get me started on that man.. I got some eggs from him total disaster only 1 hatched - they were sent in the mail just thrown in an take away container inside a small box. with no protection half of the 36 eggs were smashed and the other half when I opened them after they didn't hatch had no development at all. but most of my original quails came from a lady at Minden and eggs from Sydney quail man.

I vent sex mine Luke. I am not good at sexing by colour.

My main reason for breeding quails. Mila the 10ft coastal Carpet. Isn't she beautiful :)

You are pretty good if you can vent sex them! I keep trying, but most of the times can't see the difference.
Only certain colous can be sexed by the chest feathers, and they have to be mature.

I got 15 chicks from Brent's eggs, but I went to pick them up, had my own box with pine shavings and looked over all the eggs, discarded cracked ones (yes, some were already cracked) and helped myself to all the clean good ones. Still 40% were infertile.
I will be looking for some more fertile eggs around September, from different source (need different blood line as I want to start breeding them mysellf). Probably should contact Sydney Quailman?

Yes Sam has great birds both him and I sell them in spring. I would be happy to give you some of mine but I am down to just 3 or so eggs at the moment a day. Are you southside BrIssy or north? Hubby works on the south side so when they are laying better would happily share some of mine with you. Oh wow maybe mine were cracked before ever being sent then. Bugger. I emailed him both when they arrived and when so little hatched but he never returned my emails.

Thank you Satay, I would love to buy some eggs from you in spring. I only get 2 eggs a day now and they are not fertile anyway, they don't breed now. Will start again in September I hope.
I don't provide heating or light. You can have some of mine if you want to mix your bloodlines.
I live on the northside and work in Southbank.

Being fairly new to the Incubator game I have some questions. Prior to this we hatched all under clucky bantams. Good success but no control over when they went clucky. Found it better when we removed the eggs and reset them with fresh eggs if the time was inconvenient. My question (first of many) Is there any recommended reading for the novice?. I would like to incubate both Ducks and Guinea Fowl at a later stage but firstly need to learn the intricacies of it all. and , Does anyone know a reliable source of Guinea fowl eggs?

regards
Bill K
