Being fairly new to the Incubator game I have some questions.  Prior to this we hatched all under clucky bantams.  Good success but no control over when they went clucky.  Found it better when we removed the eggs and reset them with fresh eggs if the time was inconvenient.  My question (first of many) Is there any recommended reading for the novice?.  I would like to incubate both Ducks and Guinea Fowl at a later stage but firstly need to learn the intricacies of it all.  and , Does anyone know a reliable source of Guinea fowl eggs?

Luke yes that is all she needs. It is a huge enclosure may not look it in the picture. She comes out all the time too so she then gets to go for a slither around.
Vent sexing. Yes you are looking for the white stuff to come out from a boy. Gently press either side of the vent. White stuff boy no white stuff girl. Best to do it at 8 weeks or older.

O.K, I will have a go. Which side of the vent am I pushing? bottom ( near the tail ) and top ( up the heads way ) or left side ( near the left wing ) and right ( right wing ) ? sorry if that is confusing.

Welcome Bushy. I would try the incubating and hatching threads on here. I can't offer any advice on ducks as I have failed each time I have tried in the bator. Guineas I don't own so have no idea about them sorry.

Its actually made of some sort of plyform I think it is called it is really thick stuff but may not look it in the pictures.

Question. Do chickens get colds like people or do sneezing always mean a bigger problem?

Carl has been doing little sneezes for a few days but nothing majour This morning tuppence started but they were honking almost sneezes.

Can I wait and see a few days or do I panic lol

Yes they can get colds. If there is constant discharge from the nose she has a cold.
Sometimes colds can turn into CRD which can be fatal untreated (chronic respiratory disease)

I didn't notice any discharge, it was more the sound, I'd actually started walking back to the house and thought what the heck is that and went back. It sounds more like a duck sneezing

I am wondering if the box like temporary house at night is contributing. I've drilled ventilation holes but its still very enclosed with wood shavings.

They do sound odd when they sneeze. Sometimes mine sneeze very occasionally if they have eaten some wheat. It can irritate their gullet then they sneeze and wheat shoots out of their nose and mouth like bullets lol. It is only when they sneeze and have discharge that they have a cold. Just check for discharge next time you are out in the pen. It was more than likely a random sneeze but then again it is getting quite cold and wet lately so flu season for both humans and chooks is upon us. A good preventative for colds is garlic powder in the morning mash. Colloidal silver is also a fantastic product. You just put 10ml of it into their waterers every time you fill them up. My chickens and chicks have never had coccidiosis or a flu since I have been using it. 10ml of apple cider vinegar in their waterers also helps build their immunity but I would highly recommend colloidal silver. You can buy it from health food shops and chemists. Usually health food shops have it for a little cheaper though. It is also good to put on a chicken if they get a small cut or anything like that. then just apply it to the skin and it will help stop infection.
