Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Well just let all the chooks in together for the first time. Didnt get quite the reaction I was expecting. The new young ones have taken over the chook house and are in there eating and laying around and the existing ones have high tailed it to the back yard away from them. Seem they staged a bit of a peaceful take over lol

Only problem might be when they meet Al who is currently hiding in the nesting box because we always have to have one broody it seems (argh!!!). She does not share anything so suspect that when she comes out there might be a last ditch attempt to take back power :)

But for now all seems quite on the western front.

Hey my chicken are staying in their coop even though they have access to be free range... Just wondering if your chickens are more inclined to be in their coop rather than free range when it's coming into winter??? Their 15 almost 16 weeks and coming into lay in a few weeks. There are no dangers around as I am always around when their free range

Hi Kat,
I find with mine some prefer to free range and some are not that fussed. My cochins prefer to stay in their outside pen where my australorps are the last ones back from free ranging at night. Have they been free ranging for long? perhaps it might take them a while to get used to it if it is a new thing.

Trust the new girls to take over lol. Hope all stays peaceful on the home front.

They have been free ranging since they were fully feathered its only in the last few days they have only been more interested in their nesting boxes and coop.... Their not showing any signs of sickness.... Have normal eating habits and drink seems fine.

With passionfruit coming out of my ears. I decided to make some passionfruit cordial this morning. I made passionfruit curd the other day too. Before you ask no I did not add southern comfort to it though I did think of emptying out the bottle to use it but thought hubby may not approve lol

Could be the cool weather then if they have not been spooked by anything, If mine get spooked at all they refuse to free range for a few days .

maybe they're thinking about going broody?

ash, candled those eggs last night but it's so hard to see. my candler may need new batteries or do you think they might have very thick shells? their air sacs are on the small side but I think it'll be ok. it's been hard to keep the humidity down with all this rain but finally had a couple dry days. Looks like a few infertile but not many. I left them in just in case though because I couldn't be sure.

Mine are the opposite. If they're spooked, they won't go into their coop at night. I figure because it's dark. Thought about putting in a motion sensing light (because I can't get my head around the whole solar panel and timer yet) but dunno if it would bother them if they moved while sleeping maybe?
