Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Yeah they just seem like a lot of hard work to perfect and great losses.
Yes, they always include the good things, but leave out the bad!

I can't wait til my Araucana starts laying - she's a bit clumsy with all that crest going on blocking her vision.
haha, yeah...think I might still have to one though! Don't you need to give them A LOT of exercise as well.

OK - Araucana genetics.

My understanding is that the rumpless gene is not lethal but can cause physical difficulties in breeding.
I have had the occasional rumpless chick hatch over the years.

It is the tufting gene that is dominant and lethal - 2 copies will kill the developing embryo.
That is why breeding to the US standard is so difficult (if not impossible in my opinion).

I stand corrected, I was right about the genes except that the rumpless gene is not lethal, but two copies is 'detrimental' resulting in a very short body as excessive spin can be missing. Still not lethal though.

Thanks for the correction. I just found this link that covers it well. Also, that better results can be had from breeding from good stock.

Also someone mentioned 'brassy' as an unwanted feather fault. I assume this is a good example of a brassy bird? Her name is Jewel (12 weeks) Smudge is the blurry roo behind her.

Just thought I'd share something funny from today. Was picking up the post and there was this guy in the middle of town with two goats on leashes :) taking them for a walk by the looks of things. Very cute and the kids (mine not his) were very impressed lol

I couldn't help myself... I just quickly candled one of my Croad eggs at day 4 and Woo Hoo! We have a little life in there!!! Now I can be patient for another 6 days... I don't usually like to candle so often but I just needed to know....

Yes you do - they are exercise demons. I'm getting ready to compete with one of mine in Rally Obedience soon.
