Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Bit of a disaster here. I knew something was amiss when I heard the roo crowing on the verandah at 3 am. There has been some " argy bargy " with the bantam Broodie's sitting on my blrw. They kicked the 2 roos out and looks like they have been fighting over the eggs. 2 crushed and shrink wrapped and 2 rolled over and drowned.

. So I've separated the hens and left the remaining eggs with my best momma hen. So far I've got 2 coro's and 5 blrw.
To add to my 8 blrw that are coming up to 2 weeks of age. I have decided to leave it to the hens and turn the incubator off. Got our old neighbor from Sydney here for a BBQ , it's raining , of course.

Sorry Fancy :(

Ok, eldest chick is very aggresive actually, do I leave her in the brooder box with newly hatched, she is trying to peck eyes etc :(
or do I separate them?
I love all my animals as does my 12 yr old son. Don't need the heart break :(

She certainly sounds broody, so long as you collect the eggs daily you can still eat them.
Are the eggs fertile?

I certainly hope not! It would be an immaculate conception if they were...no roosters around here! I'd love to have one, but I doubt my Inner West neighbours or council would appreciate it.
She's back on the nest this afternoon...time to don the gardening gloves and kick her out for a free range before bed. It's so smoky here...the sky over the city is black!

Well she wasn't very happy, in fact when I took her out and plonked her on the ground, the just fluffed up and settled down where she was. I put a few seeds in front of her, and she fluffed even more. stuck her bum up and lowered her head almost to the ground. Then her sister, (the runt) came over and gave her a few pecks!

I was worried that maybe she'd hurt her leg, so sort of picked her up and got her walking, and she seems fine. She tootled around for ten minutes or so (still fluffed up and sort of chirruping) and then went back to the box. I'm thinking broody....WAAAAA!!!!
I don't have the means to break her in a separate box, so is it OK if we just ride it out? what sort of time frame are we looking at?

Yep that's what mine do too. Takes a few minutes for the brain to kick in they aren't on the nest anymore lol. We give them a pat while they won't run away, great for those don't normally let you.

I don't cage mine. I've just got part of the run sectioned off (Alcatraz) and they go out in the back yard or in there while the others are using the nesting box then late in the day I close the nesting box and let them back in with the others. It works as long as you keep her off the nest 24hrs a day for about 3 days.

I tend to open the nest box in the morning and the broody will go straight in which makes it easy to pick them up and put them in Alcatraz.

On day 4 they tend to go elsewhere and we all go thank goodness for that lol. Its always worked after 3 days except for the last time when my silkie was particularly determined and she went 8 days.
