OK... So I still have a mite problem after several weeks.. My chickens are only 8 weeks old... Tried everything... One of my friends is a vet and she strongly recomends using Advocate.... The same stuff you use for puppies and kittens.. As it kills the whole cycle of the mite...

Has anyone done this with their chickens????

I have heard of people using ivermectin and I'm going to research it myself. Anything would have to be better than pestine. After using that stuff I was coughing and my lips were numb. I can only imagine how the birds feel.

. You need to clean the coop out as well . I use coopex, you get it from the hardware, in the garden section.

The weather in Sydney has been horrible lately, hot and humid. Today 35o and 90 klm hot winds, the smell of smoke some days is really bad, I feel so sorry for those affected by the bush fires. My girls are really feeling the heat, other than giving them lots of water what else can I do to cool them down, they look like they are panting.

I'm in Sydney too! It's dreadful! I gave mine watermelon from the fridge, they love it but they did chase eachother so that made them even more hot!

The firefighters are modern day heroes!

We used ivermectin when we had mites and it did get rid of them. Didn't work on the lice we got a few months later though.

Put some ice cubes in their water and buy some frozen fruit and peas as a treat. Watermelon keeps them busy , takes their mind off the heat. I spray the hose into the trees above the coop.

It can get to 45c here in summer, we have misters spraying into the chook run but they hate it, don't realise it's for their own good. I usually end up herding them into a small area and hose them down. Luckily we have trees in our run that provide lots of shade. That's usually where I head to when it gets too hot. Hubby has rigged yp a fan inside the hen house for night time as they pant at night. I too as you say put ice cubes in the water and give them fresh veges straight from the fridge

I have a sprinkler system set up on the roof of the their night pen I turn on to cool it if it gets too hot.

My bad luck with pekins continues.. I got the first lot and 6 were smashed and the other 6 are that dirty. Covered in mud etc that I think they wont be worth incubating. lot number 2 were not posted til 4pm yesterday so no hope of them making it today so they will spend the weekend in Brisbane.. Wish people would realise they need to be posted before 10am if they are going to make it the next day.. (I did tell her that but I guess she chose not to listen).

I can't believe they would send you dirty eggs! It's absolutely bucketing down here. Just loading the horses to go to the hobart show. Going to be a slippery showjumping surface.

me either fancy but they came from Tassie and I guess with all the rain you are getting down it's hard to keep them clean. I would never send dirty eggs to people but a lot do... Oh well what can ya do ....Good luck at the show fancy.
