Your going to find out eventually. Anyway we might not be able to help as Silkies, even X's are rather hard to tell the sex.
Yes, it is possible for hens to crow, not usually at that age but clearly still possible. We had a lady on here who had a crowing bantie, she had to eventually take her back to the previous breeders.
Yeah, I know Luke I am going to find out eventually but I am a Wuss!
I will try and get some close-up comb & heads shots on the weekend. I have lots of fun-shots but nothing really suitable for sexing.

This is the one I call Suzi; she has partially feathered feed but not full clown-shoes (12 weeks old):

These were taken a couple of weeks ago (maybe 11 weeks old); Suzi up top, and Tina on the lawn; she has feather-stumps on her legs but not any real feathers of note (another indication of X'd I think).

Suzi:

Tina:

Tina on the left, Suzi on the right:

These were probably around the 9-10 week mark Tina on the left (note the 'featherless' feet, at 13 weeks they still look the same), Suzi on the right:

Telia I really have trouble with Silkies and at so young it real hard.

This is my current GUESS.
Tina Pullet, Suzie roo.
Thanks for that Luke, I understand it is a guess but I have thought all along that Tina was definitely a pullet and Suzi is the one I am concerned about. Tina was always the runt from day 1 and they were both heaps smaller than the 3 I gave away. Suzi is ever so slightly bigger than Tina and her legs are slightly 'fatter'. Their personalities, at this age, are identical. As I said, I will get some comb close-ups on the weekend.
Thanks again :)

Any thoughts of if they are X'd or just not so good quality Silkies?

Teila, I would say that they are silkies. The leg feathering varies and 4 toes is not uncommon. Be happy with them, they are pet quality but if you had no intention of breeding or showing , what does it matter ? I'd need a better look at the combs to guess sex.

Thank you Fancychooklady :)
I am very, very happy with them, love them to bits! Definitely pets and no breeding or showing. I am not bothered if they are X'd or Silkies, I was thinking that knowing if they were X'd would maybe help with sexing them. Having to part with either or both of them is going to be devastating! As I mentioned previously, their combs do not really look like the combs I have been studying on similar aged Silkies.

Anyways, I understand it is all a bit difficult with no close-ups so I will try and get some on the weekend if not sooner.

I thought waiting 21 days for them to hatch was stressful but that pales in comparison to worrying that they may be roosters and I can't keep them!

Thanks again :)

I can see the sales of Pimms going up.

Back to my mystery chook. Yes it's a boy. I named him Matty after a friend who despises chooks because he actually looks like him. Even his wife agrees there's a resemblance. Matty has four toes - the chook, not the man.

The blue wheatons are lovely thanks for that.

And good on Wilma. !!!
