Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

At this time it was suspected that all the chicks had been eaten

.

Wow Luke ... that is a monster!

That thing would not fit in my bantam coop where Cilla is nesting!
Look at the claws on it! OMG. Hope you don't mind but I am going to post one of the pictures on another thread where I have a few American friends?
Well done on catching and relocating it.
I note you mentioned "At this time it was suspected that all the chicks had been eaten" Was that the case? Did you lose your chicks?

My coro's enjoying their sprouted barley. Sid, what temp is your incubator on? I was talking to an old timer and he said that if your roo ratio is high you should drop the temp. Have no idea if there is any truth to it, but if I were you I would calibrate your thermometer and see how accurate it is.

Well Lucas , you can now add ' lizard wrangler ' to your resume.

I sure can!!

YOU AREEE JOKING!!!!! That thing is horrible! I wish it no harm lol but gahhh gives me the creeps! Big half dragon half dinosaur looking thing! Almost prefer a snake hahaha

Luke $10 says if any of these new eggs hatch they'll be roosters! Hahaha
hahaha. It actually isn't a big one. There are Goanna's out there that are twice the size of this one. It was really cool if you lay down, looking right at him and he is staring you front on, really looks like a dinosaur!
More like $50 say they'll be roosters!!!

Quote: Yeah those claws almost got us a few times. Have to be careful as they are full of bacteria and you would need stitches etc....but that didn't stop us picking the cage glove less.lol.
Yeah, go ahead! I am actually going to make a thread called "You Yanks want to see a DRAGON?!?". Other tittle suggestions are appreciated!
Oh goodness, I for got to add :

YES! All the chicks are fine!!! I can't believe day old chicks managed to survive a Goanna attack!!!
They are all healthy and happy. Broody mum got a few feathers ripped out ( bit of blood ) but apart from that they are fine. Don't see to be in to much shock, although mum and chicks run into their nest boxes when I come in.

Looks good Fancy. You could have probably left the barley to grow a few more days but still good!
I don't think there is any truth in that Myth Fancy.lol. I have heard it before and a chicks sex isn't dependent on temp. Like how can it???

Great news!!

I know of a lady locally who sells day old speckled Sussex. I was warned against buying from her because nearly all of her chicks turn out to be roos. I was privy to a conversation and the general opinion was that she should turn her temp down by 2 degrees and do a test batch to see if it altered the outcome . As I said , I don't know how realistic this is , but I'm guessing that Sid will be ready to give anything a try.
Here's a pic of my orphan duck and his boosum buddy.

I was just thinking about that some more .... how is that for proof that you should not come between a mumma hen and her babies; what a brave girl she is!
