Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I know Aus ones are not that flash, but I spied the one in the bottom right corner of your triangle and thought "I hope we are near there" We hatched from some about a 5 on the Maran scale, some were better than others. We have A BV that does ok and a Wellie that should lay a nice shade too, but our hopes are on the Maran for the darkest.

Ahh ok. You know in the US a 5 barley counts. They say 5 and below on that chart ( a very poor chart ) is not a 'proper' Marans. I am not sure what the Aussies go by though. Is their even a Aus standard for Marans? I have never head of anyone showing them.

BV?

I'll pm you when I know more detail but I'd definitely love one or maybe two, I know someone who was looking for one if she hasn't got one already, I'll ask her now. I'm heading out Pinky's way in a few weeks so if you don't mind holding onto them till then??
No worries. I will be hanging on to most of them for a while.
I have provisionally identified the two I want to keep, but as they mature they change so much, so I need to hang on to them.

I'm going to try to show mine at the royal melb show this year if I can organise myself. I'm still getting a few nice eggs but most of my Marans are moulting. I posted some of these pics on some other pages but the dark olives are from some of my new pullets. My Marans eggs here are around a 4 according to the American Marans charts I have. The darkest I've seen is a 6. I can't wait for the new pullets to start laying :)

Thanks heaps, save me the next best two ;)

Ours were not as dark as yours, maybe just looking at a chart online is different to a decent printed one.

I will just have to wait and see, but I don't think they will be anywhere near as close to that dark lol

I guess by the size of the egg maybe, I'm not sure how it all works. I was going to just try showing eggs though. I don't really like the idea of taking my birds to shows, I think it might be quite stressful on them and might expose them to unnecessary evils.

x2 My friend. Showing sounds like a awful lot of work for little or no reward. The closest I would get to showing would be to breed SQ birds and sell them to showers.
You know you have to RE-QUARANTINE a bird every time it comes back from a show.

Imagine taking birds from VIC to the Sydney Easter show, people do that. It must be horrible on the birds.
