Is it normal to not be able to get 'different' breeds at point of lay? I've been trying to source some pullets from a few nearby places but they all have chicks of just a few weeks old. Only one has actually replied to my email, the other phone calls/messages have gone unanswered :(
The local egg farm has pullets at point of lay this week, but they are hyalines (I'm a novice at this and thought my chooks from them last year were Isa's)

and I was hoping to get some different ones this time.

Well it does depend on where you live, but yes POL breeds apart from Hylines/ ISA's/ Sex-links are fairly hard to track down.
You may have to hatch some of your own eggs using a broody or incubator or buy chicks.
Where abouts do you live?

It costs a lot to feed a chicken to point of lay. Most of us that breed sell them much younger for that reason. There are some that sell point of lay though. You may just have to look around a bit more.

And I usually get attached by the time they are point of lay so it gets harder and harder the older they are before you sell them... sometime I feel like I'm doing a background check on the buyers to make sure they are going to good homes lol but it seems to me a lot of farms that sell point of lay hens are mass producing and the birds don't get handled like they do from a small farm... but it all depends on what people want their chickens for. Some people just want chickens for eggs and that's all. Ours are pets that just so happen to be beautiful rare breeds as well. But I can say with confidence that every little chick hatched here has been snuggled on the laps of small animal obsessed children :) where abouts are you deebeeoz? Someone on here must be near you or know someone near you
