Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

No I don't vaccinate , in reality you would need to buy in chicks from hatcheries if you wanted to have a fully vaccinated flock and I have various ages at all times.
Thanks Sam, as I get older I retain what I think I may need to remember and ' trash ' the rest. When I'm researching I bookmark things that might come in handy later and my genuine love for all creatures great and small drives me to help others to do what's best for their animals. I try. :/

Hopefully this link will send you straight to it.

I am having a lot of troubles with my chikens this winter :(

Hi , you really are having a hard time . You need to be certain that they are actually getting their meds. The problem with water is it's the first thing they give up when they are sick. Get a 5 ml syringe and give them drops morning and night. Go to the chemist and get some chlorsig antibiotic eye drops OTC and put 2-3 drops in each eye twice a day. Here is a medicine chart showing common meds used for mycoplasma , you may need to switch if the oxymav isn't working.

This is what I think you are dealing with.

Hi everybody.

My chicken has mites!!! What can i do????

I mees to do somethin stat. I only just noticed them when i was washing around her eyes. She is not in good condition.

What did you vaccinate them for? Also where did you get it from to be able to have such small amounts?

So if any birds have been to expose to Mareks (or birds with Mareks) there is no point in vaccinating them?
Where did you get your vaccine from?
We had rescue birds, depending who we spoke to said varied what they had. One breeder says it was a vitamin defeciency, the vet said it was Marek's disease. Will culled our flock, went through an extensive cleaning process then only hatched eggs. The first four birds we hatched we did not vaccinate for MD as test cases. Later birds hatched we had found a supplier of MD vac that would split the large dose, we sold a few doses and vaccinated our day olds. It cost a lot, and given we are confident it's not an issue for us anymore it was probably a waste of funds.

It's not recommended to mix non vaccinated birds with vaccinated birds.
I had heard that, but also had read quite a bit of info the dispelled the mixing of flocks. In the case of MD, it's an immune booster, not an actual vaccination. The injection does not given the bird the virus, so it's can't pass it onto an unvaccinated bird. The problem though is is a vaccinated bird is exposed to the disease, it becomes a carrier without showing signs, capable of infecting other birds, if they are not vaccinated they may die.

Thats why we have kept unvaccinated birds in our flock.

So can I vaccinate all my older birds?

As Fancy say's. Some try, but it has not been proven to work. Needs to be first day of life for MD, and the bird can't be exposed to the virus for a few weeks. If it is hatched with a broody it is exposed to the dander and the vaccine will be ineffective. I don't know about other vaccinations as I have never done any of those.

You will need to dust them with a poultry dust. The problem with any lice treatment is that it can be hard on an already sick bird. How are your birds today? :)
