Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I just let the breeder know that I don't need the 2 chicks I ordered & told him why. I hate messing people around, but I thought that the sooner he knows the better. He did also put his price up by 25% after I ordered the chicks, but I suspect from the website pics that they are worth it. Uncomfortable job done.
Snowy is not living up to her breed at all & is quietly plastered over the eggs still. : )

Hey there vehve :)

Thank you all for your best wishes and congratulations!

The full story is that this was Tina’s first attempt at being a mum, so I just ordered some mixed, little banties which also turned out to be the seller’s first time at shipping eggs.

The 9 eggs got held up in the post office and some were way past the 10 days and some cracked. So she ended up with:

2 which were 10 days when given to her, marked Lav and White Silkie ... ... sadly these two did not develop.

1 which was 9 days when given to her, marked Gloria (no idea what Gloria is! lol) ... ... this little one hatched yesterday and doing well.

2 which were 7 days when given to her, one is not marked and the other was also marked Gloria ... .. the second Gloria did not make it but the unmarked one hatched this morning, doing OK!

So, I have a Gloria and a total unknown, one from 7 days and one from 9. I played a hunch that the three remaining eggs she was sitting on had not developed, no pips, and the hunch was right.

Hopefully tomorrow she will take them outside and start lessons

Blondie is also now broody and after a week of trying to break her, I have caved and ordered her a ½ dozen of mixed bantams also. This time from somewhere closer

While I will find homes for them I sort of feel bad giving eggs to Blondie in that if I get to keep one of Tina’s bubbies I will not be able to keep any of Blondies :(

Zoning laws (6 chickens/no roosters) and the fact that I do not think it would be fair to have more than 6 bantams in my current set-up dictates that I will be at my maximum. While I could extend some more I really do not want to push my luck with the neighbours and Council. Also, I think 6 is a nice number to keep.

Is it wrong to hatch out more chickens that I cannot keep? Is that similar to those people who have heaps of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens?

Anyways, without further delay … Tina’s bubbies ………

They are very cute telia.!

Six is a good number. That's what we have now. I have no idea what our local council limit is as it gives you everything but an amount you can keep on the website. I sort of thought it would be around 10 so surprised to find yours is only six.

Lol, it's called ' chicken math ' and we all fall victim to it sooner or later.

Here you're allowed to keep a "small flock", and apparently the recommendation for that is five. We asked what happens if we get six, and they said that the recommendation is five. Then we said okay, we're getting nine, to which they said that the recommendation is five. So apparently it's some sort of loosely existing none enforceable guideline.

In Aus it varies from council to council. I went to glenorchy , outside of hobart to look at some bantams and as soon as I got out of the car I could hear the Roos.
Now this guy has about 50 birds on a 1/4 acre block. Each and every breeder cage has a roo, I asked him how he gets away with it and he said that the glenorchy city council has no rooster laws. Go figure. I've since discovered that our council doesn't have one either but are working furiously towards enforcing one.

Ours didn't either, it was just "not recommended" but the inspector said even though he couldn't make us get rid of him if we didn't we would be fined for breaking noise laws. So they get you anyway.

Congrats of the gorgeous fluffy butts Teila! So funny that she gave you the hens name rather than the breed.
Personally I don't think it's the same at all. People who let their animals have litter after litter are often doing it for profit & you can care for 6 hens well in a lot less space than 6 cats or dogs. I'm a lot more confident about finding homes for my excess chicks than I would be for kittens. I also don't think 6 is quite enough for proper flock management taking into consideration the time it takes to raise a pullet & how many eggs my family goes through. Okay, I can think of lots of excuses for chicken maths.
