appps To answer your question, my integration is a little complicated but going well and improving each day.

Like you, my yard is not peep escape proof but the beans are not trying to escape because when they are free ranging it is with mum; granted she is rapidly losing interest in them but that does not stop them sticking close to her. She has never tried to escape so her staying put in the yard seems to keep them staying put also.

The tricky bit is when everyone is free ranging, then the beans have to stay in their small run because the big gals pick on Tina and being close, the beans get scared and scatter.

How it works at the moment is that Tina gets a free range with the other big gals while the beans are still in their run; also giving them the opportunity to not be relying on mum so much. About half way through, all the big gals, except Tina, go back to the run so that the beans can have a free range and get used to the big wide world with their mum. Lastly, Tina and the beans go back to their run and the other big gals get to come out again until bed time.

OK, it is a lot of work but the benefits are:
  1. Tina is still socialising with the big gals and each day they are more accepting of her return.
  2. The beans gets to acclimatise to the yard with mum close by.
  3. The beans do not have to go through the pecking order until I know which one (if either) is staying. They are growing in confidence every day.

In the past it has been easy because my past two hatches were with the matriarch and I just popped her and bubs right back in; no one was game to go near them! Lol

It has been tricky this time because Tina is bottom or pretty well close to bottom on the pecking order.

Anyways, as I said, baby steps and patience are paying off and each day is a little better than the one before

I am sorry to hear that Carl is not well.

Sam, beautiful pictures! I am so jealous of your lush, green lawn! Wow, good score on the free nest box; nice one!

I leave still chuckling and smiling at the epic fails for day

Sam, I was just out in a T-shirt, and it didn't feel too cold at 10C. I didn't stay out there for too long though. -20 is when it starts to get cold. My favorite weather is around -5 though, it's cold enough for the snow to stay solid even in the sun, but you can still do whatever you want outside. I hate winters when it bounces around 0, that's just icky.
I agree with Felix. 10 degrees is perfect working outside weather.
Anything over 25 is a bit much for me.
But then my DNA is "Ultra Norse'. xxxxxxx M

Ewww 10 degrees sees me in bed with electric blanket watching movies all day lol

Ive noticed my older girls dont like salad. Lettuce cucumber and tomato didnt take their fancy.

on the up side the babies have already learnt to put themselves to bed. Just need to learn to lock the door as well ;-)
