Miracle kept running around in the heat up near the house yesterday and was looking shocking. I got the hose and hosed her down... She looks good today.

Yep, water consumption is going to be through the roof today but worth every drop!

My only question is how do you keep the snakes out?

@satay , it's a bit of a worry that your marans didn't who any signs other than panting. Even my chicks are panting, although I've noticed that by the time I finish hosing they stop. And 40C already, yikes!

I have lots of big gums in the marans pen but i may have to look into somethng else if this weather stays so hot. I spent an hour hosing down their pen this morning soaking as much of the dirt as i could and i have the sprinklers running so hopefully thats enough for the girls today.

@Ashburnham. Have just planted a black fig in our pen about a month ago. Was more because I had nowhere else to put it but good to know it will serve a dual purpose!

I cracked. I went outside to mist the chooks & check their water. It was hot in both the drinkers and the minute I turned off the hose the hot wind was suffocating. Stampy wasn't moving. I swore I'd never have grown chooks in the house & now I have 4 in the laundry. I don't have space for the chicks, so I can only hope they will be ok & Snowy as she's mediterranean breed.
This is going to be a challenging summer for chooks. : (

Didn't lose any of mine yesterday but like the forecast said, even hotter.
I'm going out to the run every hour and soaking the dirt and wetting the concrete in the coop.
Added frozen veges to their water and have dunked a few bottoms into water.

I'm afraid that's all I can do really to alleviate the heat for them. Hopefully it'll start to cool down soon but I won't hold my breath.

You may think me crazy but this morning I did 2 dog shows, one at 7.30 and the other at 8. By the time I had packed up and got on the road it was 38 degrees at 9.30am. Ugh!!!

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been on Uni is coming to a close for me, so exams, exams and more exams
Couple more weeks and I am finally finished
Not to mention doctors visits, fixing my ute etc oh and bought a gorgeous little bantam into the world.
She was left in the egg (mum had hatched 11 others) and 2 poor little eggs were left in the nest to go cold
One had passed away in the egg, but managed to chip "Soy" out of her egg, body was stone cold, just breathing, got the hair dryer out and heat lamp out.
Miraculously she survived and is still going strong. 4 days old now and very spoilt. Sleeps with a teddy of a night time, toddles around after me during the day.
Sits up under my hair and nestles to have a rest during the day



She's very content being handled all the time. Tried to reintroduce her back to her flock, but they all pecked at her, including Mum, so she's staying here
