Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

@satay. Sorry to hear you lost your hen. Hope you are all surviving the heat today!

@Ashburnham. Have just planted a black fig in our pen about a month ago. Was more because I had nowhere else to put it but good to know it will serve a dual purpose!

Thanks Appps. Happy to report that we only got to 45C so about the same temp as the day before. No lossess yesterday, today is suppossed to only get to 38c which will be a pleasent change from the last 3 days.

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been on Uni is coming to a close for me, so exams, exams and more exams :) Couple more weeks and I am finally finished :) Not to mention doctors visits, fixing my ute etc oh and bought a gorgeous little bantam into the world. :) She was left in the egg (mum had hatched 11 others) and 2 poor little eggs were left in the nest to go cold :( One had passed away in the egg, but managed to chip "Soy" out of her egg, body was stone cold, just breathing, got the hair dryer out and heat lamp out. Miraculously she survived and is still going strong. 4 days old now and very spoilt. Sleeps with a teddy of a night time, toddles around after me during the day. Sits up under my hair and nestles to have a rest during the day :) She's very content being handled all the time. Tried to reintroduce her back to her flock, but they all pecked at her, including Mum, so she's staying here :) One very lucky little chick :)
Oh and what a little sweety. Nice to hear from you again sandee, busy busy busy. Good luck with your exams. :)

Sorry for your loss, I only wish I could send you some of this rain. :hugs
Ash's recommendation of fruit trees in your pens , is a good one. I plant cherry and apple trees in mine. In your climate you could probably plant mango or some exotic fruit or nut tree.

Think you should have named her lucky! Very cute!,
I should have hey :) But son wanted to call her Soy lol Now we have Noodles, Kiev and Soy as far as the bantams go :)
Didn't realise that certain things aren't instinctive. Had to teach her how to peck at her food and everything.
She is finally eating on her own and still trying to learn how to scratch without falling over lol

Do they try and eat them when the plants eat young though? I have a custard apple outside the main pen but the other 4 pens only have gums in them so would be interesting to try. Someone said citrus trees are good for chook runs I have a lot of them planted around the place so was kinda hoping for something different... Hmmm I'll have a think about it.

Yeah they will take any fruit that they can reach. Macadamia trees have nice dense foliage.

Some chooks will ringbark young trees, so you need some protection around the base of the stem,
but the fruit is a valuable source of extra food for them. They will eat all fallen fruit.
