Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I think you are right about the weather people getting it wrong Satay.  We were supposed to get rain today, it's hot and humid and I don't think the clouds are going to amount to anything.

I have pawpaw growing in tyres in the run and have had to put fencing around that.  They haven't fruited yet, but apparently the leaves are very tasty.  I planted black berries in the tyre recently.  I figure that the chooks can keep the tendency to spread under control.

Teila, I'm going to use your idea when my rose gets taller.  I take the fencing off (it's in the run) every now and again so that the chicks can eat the grass but if I leave it off too long they dig it up.  I think it's because I keep it damp so it's nice, cool soil.

I brought my hens inside for 3 hours yesteray.  I swore never again because it smelt so bad.  My hubby who has never been that keen on them said, well maybe, to save a life.
oh what a sweet hubby :)

I've managed to intergrate the babies and the big girls over the weekend. A few pecks here and there but nothing to be concerned about.

was worried how the broody girl would take it but she is just angry at everyone since I jeep locking her out the nest box.

I do have one question. Her comb isn't normal its rather droopy. Shes eating and drinking well and dust bathing and dislikes everyone. Never noticed it last time she was broody. Is it normal?

A droopy comb can be a sign of dehydration but if it is also pale in colour that can indicate anemia.

We didn't quite hit the 40 mark, came closer than I'd like though. Cold change and rain came through on saturday which was most welcome.
Sunny again but quite pleasant, even drenched a few hundred lambs this morning. Managed to sell ten of my chicks to a neighbour yesterday which is great because I didn't really have much room for them. Plus feeding is getting a bit intense. And now I've got three more broody chooks sitting on eggs, another reason I needed to move them along.

Congrats on your chicks sandee and good luck with your exams.
p.s I'm from the central west aswell :)
Has been gorgeous weather since that rain came through hey :) Nice and chilly here this morning :)
Thank you for the good luck :) Nearly lost my bantam chick yesterday, left her alone too long due to exams and running errands :( But she is still snuggled up in my bed as we speak lol
Made a nest for her and had my hand in with her all night, her name should be Lucky I tell ya. am wondering if her internal organs are fully formed or my intervening getting her out of her egg has bought her out too early :( (I know I had no other choice, her egg and body temp were cold)
I live on Obley Rd between Dubbo and Molong :)

Soy is still very wobbly on her feet this morning, has no interest in eating :(
I have no idea what to do :( I was thinking about boiling an egg up today and mash it to try and get some protein in her?
I know I had no choice but to get her out of the egg, but hate the feeling that she may be underdeveloped :(
You would think at 5 days old, she'd be running everywhere by now

SandeeC aaaw, congrats on saving Soy, sounds like a little cutie! I am not very experienced when it comes to illness and treating little ones and will leave that up to those in the thread with more experience.

AussieChics congrats on the smooth integration!

I have some news … at 5 weeks of age Bear has gone to her new home! Blondie wanted out of the broody pen to the point that she actually escaped! She also laid her first post hatch egg yesterday.

Anyways, she obviously wanted back in the flock as she was pacing up and down the joining fence, clucking up a storm. Because integrating Bear was never an option, I placed an ad on Gumtree and within 4 hours she had a new home.

So, after Bear had gone we tried letting Blondie out for a while with Cilla, Dusty & LuLu (we kept Tina and the Beans separated for this one .. baby steps). Well, as we have learnt to expect, it did not go smoothly. Lots of pecking and jumping on each other to the point that Blondie decided on top of the run was a good spot! We will get there though .. more baby steps!

I am pretty much convinced that Spot is a rooster that I am now just waiting for that crow
