Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Sandee, hope everything goes well with Soy. For future reference, don't even consider the gas chamber, you won't get it set up properly at home, and you'll end up causing suffering to the chick and you don't want to watch that either. A sturdy pair of scissors or garden shears are probably the quickest route with a chick.

Fancy, how is the day going with your guests?

Yeah I know, but wanted it to look natural, cause if my son saw it he would be more upset than me :( was gonna gas her with the car exhaust :(

I would just do it out of sight of him and explain why it had to be done. I don't have any kids of my own just yet, but the neighbor's kids have been pretty actively participating in our chickeneering, they just turned 10 and 7. When we had to process some roos, they didn't take part in the killing itself, but got to experience the butchering, and they took it pretty well. It's nice for them to learn where food comes from. They also were the first to find one of our girls after a hawk had gotten her, and they seemed to take that pretty well too. Kids can handle a lot more than we think they can, and with chickens some losses are quite probable, so it might be a good idea to prepare them for such events.

A little off topic a little not. When I was 8 or 9 my father would make me put down our sick fish. It was horrible yes but knew there was nothing else we could do and it was putting the fish out of its misery.

in saying that though. Not sure I will handle if I have to do it to one of my chickens. But as a kid I handled it well. Like vehve said kids can handle more then what we give them credit for

Thanks guys :) Yeah he seemed to approve of her going around to Pete's to see what he can do for her.
He got a little teary, but accepted it rather well :) So first step over and done with :)
I actually got a full nights sleep, something I haven't done since her hatching :)
So don't feel so emotional today :)
The grass parrot didn't make it either, obviously too many injuries sustained by the cat :(
Oh well, will be one burial today

Felix gasing can be done at home properly if you know how.( no I don't use a car exhaust) I do it for my snake food and I can assure you they don't suffer at all. They close their eyes and go to sleep. Being the x vego that I am I would never do anything to cause an animal to suffer. You are correct though in I would not recommend it for the average person to do at home.

Sorry about the parrot but you did all you could. Birds seem to suffer shock after an attack more so than chickens , I think it's the shocvk that does them in in the end.

37mm of lovely rain yesterday afternoon not as much as the folks in brissy got but I am doing the happy dance none the less. Off to Costco today .. be my first time in one of the stores. Neighbours have wanted me to go with them for agers so I sure hope it is worth the rather long drive.
