Oh you are such a ' rummin ' (funny bugger ) , Felix. Thank you for giving me something to laugh about on a rather harrowing day for us Aussies.

Im a little worried she's losing interest. Due on Wednesday and I find her off the nest in the arvo. Been checking the eggs 1 was cooler then I'd like but the others were still warm. Thankfully its been warm here. Who knows how long she's been off them.

when do they start pipping? Around day 21?

I wouldn't worry just yet. Eggs can handle an amazing temperature range when being looked after by a broody. My broody went for a graze only once, but I think she forgot about the eggs & I didn't notice her out until I closed the door to the run and she had a major freak out. The eggs hatched just fine.

I let my hens out for a graze this afternoon without the chicks and I'm pretty sure I heard a crow - twice.

It was much deeper and not as gawky as I expected. I sat there for ages watching to see who the culprit was but he only made the offending noise again once I moved away from the run. I think it may have been my favourite, Rumpless.

Those look like male tail feathers to me. What do you guys think?

Cwrite, I've never had an araucana before, how early would they start crowing if they are a rooster? I have a bantam and it's tail feathers are looking a little roosterish to me but since they aren't supposed to even have tails I have no idea!! Mines about 11 weeks and the pekin hatched at the same time started crowing weeks ago

Well just checking in with good news this morning. Finally locked the broody box last night so penny and pepper couldn't go back to it to sleep. They were cuddled up on the roost at bedtime (mind you the one won't let them sleep there was in the nesting box , that's an argh!!! For another day lol)

Got up nice and early this morning so they weren't locked in with cranky pants winry too long but she was at the door waiting and penny and pepper were just sitting up on the roost. So a super smooth final transition. As long as all goes well at bedtime tonight when I lock captain out of the nesting box I think we can call our whole experiment into hatching done and a success.

Christie, I'm just being cheeky calling 'him' Rumpless. The Australian ones do have tails and I haven't had Ara's before either. I initially thought I'd be able to sex them all at 6 weeks and move them on then. Now I'm trying to hold out to 12 weeks to wait for the thin saddle feathers to grow. I can't have roosters so I guess I'm lucky they lasted this long before a baby crow. I have 11 chicks in total still so working out who crowed is proving tricky.

Sounds good appps! I think sheers numbers made the transition to roosting easier for mine, although my final stage is thinning them out and I am really looking forward to getting there. My coop looks like a grid with roosting bars for everyone. I can't wait to get back to normal!

My baby Ara was easy to pick. Big legs feet and very upright posture reder comb than others but my girls had saddle feathers and roosterish tail too. Had to look for pointy feathers rather than round. hope this helps
