Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi everyone not only am I new to this site but as my username suggests I'm very new to chooks in fact birds of any variety (had a nasty experience a while back with some rescued battery hen chooks but recently I've looked after a neighbours home brought up girls a few times and found them easy to get along with and have discovered that I actually like chooks and am no longer "scared" of them).  We are putting finishing touches to things before bringing the "girls" home on the weekend.  Hoping I can "hang out" here and start to learn about chooks, their needs, wants and best ways to look after them.
I'm in SA btw

:welcome. We look forward to getting to know you and your girls. :)

Hi Appps, Thanks for the welcome :)

I'm getting some Brown Isa, Rhode Island Red and Gold Lace Wyandotte, I think there's another breed in the mix but can't recall just now (they're on order with a family member) ... they've all been brought up together and are currently point of lay (about 3 to 8 weeks before laying commences I hope). My OH is making laying boxes ready, they'll be finished tomorrow as will roosting perches, water and feed trays will be hanging just a little off the ground to hopefully keep any rodents away but still be readily accessible to the girls. They're going to be in a concreted area which is fully insulated with door opening either all the way or either top or bottom. We breed dogs and had an unused whelping room (fully insulated) and attached secure run (fully fenced) with just the gate being able to see through but securely wired and shut so this will become their home - it's separate from all the dogs as our dogs (all but one are girls too) only go in that area nearby to the other whelping room when they're about two weeks away from whelping and the run for that one faces another direction.

While I can't see myself going the nappy route myself, I've kept one in a dog crate in my bathroom for 3 days. Think your way is probably lots more fun for the chicken :)
Haters gonna hate :) just try and ignore them.
Somewhat amusingly - I had Taylor Swift's Shake It Off stuck in my head and I read this just as the "Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate" part was playing in my mind. XD Perfect.

You're doing a far fight better than i did if you're putting on the finishing touches BEFORE bringing your chooks home. >.> Some of us are a bit overeager <.<

I'm picking up a new boy tomorrow! A Silver Laced Wyandotte roo who is sadly unwanted. Lucky me for having a free quarantine coop right at the moment! ^_^

That's not me being this good, I'd have brought them home on the spot, its my OH saying no, not until the area's ready for them, but originally it was going to be another week away but I've at least managed to wangle it so that things will be done this week so he's happy to bring them home this weekend instead.

I must admit I've spent the last few weeks researching and through Pinterest found this site last night and from there I found this thread, had a bit of a read of the first few pages then plunged right in

.

I hope the new boy settles in well for you. I don't want any roo's at least not yet.

Welcome, newcomers!

Tandykins, you are doing a great job, don't let the haters get you down.

I popped into work yesterday before the term starts, and the last of our Isas died over the holidays. Not a bad run...I think she was nearly 4. As to the other chooks, the last four have all been inherited by a student who keeps getting chicks that surprisingly get too big for her Kings Cross balcony. One of them is particularly attractive, and I wouldn't be surprised if she is a he...lots of gorgeous, blue/black droopy tail feathers and a biggish comb. Nobody has hard any crowing yet, so I think the plan is to wait, plead ignorance if someone complains and if it is, indeed a He, rehome him! (hopefully)
I'll try to get some photos next week, as I'd really like to know what one of the ladies' breed is...she's quite unusual looking.
