Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

We have a lice problem. It is 10.30pm and I can't get into town until next week. I ran out of Pestene yesterday. I have this spray for ornamental birds, and it does say "Not for birds intended for human consumption" but our chooks are layers, not meat birds.

Should I use it, or just wait until I can get more Pestene or similar?

What is the ingredient list of the one you have?

2 pips now, I can't help myself I keep checking them, so glad I got the incubator with clear sides so I don't have to open it! I have the mini brooder set up with a version of aarts heater plate. Will keep them in there inside the big brooder till they are up and running and strong enough to be with the bigger chicks.
I'm going to bed to fill the time till the hatch, fingers crossed it goes smoothly and I get 3 little chicks!!!
Photos just because

Kleonaptra thank you for your thoughts which I do appreciate. I have done some Crow research back when the murder first invaded and again now due to the couple that remained.

“They wreck up the place” is just one of the reasons I do not want to befriend them; they are already doing that. If I were to befriend this couple and then their babies and any friends they bring I believe I would just be making a rod for my own back.

I have chickens as my feathered friends and the Crows may just bring ‘nasties’ which they may pass on to the chickens. We have been here for nearly 6 years and have never seen a Hawk. The Crows have only been a problem for 2 of those 6 years so I do not think they can be credited with keeping the Hawks away; more likely we are not in an area where Hawks are common. Also, the gals run is covered and free range is always under supervision due to neighbourhood dogs and cats. So, as we do not have a Hawk problem, I can see no purpose to having them around and they are noisy, destructive and a threat to any chicks we have.

I do not have lots of land on which we can peacefully coexist and only a small residential block. If they lived down the back of my ‘property’ I would not be so concerned but being woken by a Crow vocalising right outside your bedroom window at dawn is no fun and having them screech constantly while you are trying to work is frustrating to say the least. They are also depositing carrion in the fish pond and garden which is not good for either the fish or the chickens if they find it.

I know I have probably already made an enemy of them and I am in their sights. I couldn’t hurt them but I have no intention of giving into their demands and making friends with them. If they show even the slightest signs of building a nest in their tree I will be hitting it with the high pressure hose (before eggs).

As any crow deterrents (large paper flapping owl or eagle etc) are probably going to scare the chickens more than the Crows, it looks like I am going to have to continue to chase them off and if it means war, war it is!

Anyways, if anyone has any suggestions on a deterrent, I am all ears?

CherryAdventure we have lived here coming up to 6 years and have never seen a snake.

Congrats on the pips ChristieB, looking forward to the bubby pics!

Good job on the outside area for the three week olds sjturner79 and congrats on the broodies … Not sure if I have told my gals yet but nobody is going broody this year! Lol, I wish!

Sorry to hear about the lice Sidhe13
As sjturner79 has suggested, the ingredient list of the ornamental bird spray may provide evidence of if it is safe to use on chickens.
When I went through a mite infestation, I used Yates Success and Neem Oil on the coop and Fancy uses no brand (black and gold or Homebrand etc) Surface Spray on her chickens. I have not tried that but if I remember correctly, it was recommended to her by a breeder and they have been using if for years with no ill effects. Anyways, I will leave it to Fancy to expand on that if need be.

ctive constituents: 1.25g/L Permethrin 25:75, 6.25 g/L Piperonyl Butoxide, 20mg/L Methoprene

The piperonyl butoxide is the chemical that renders it not safe for use on ' food producing ' animals, that includes eggs. The risks include liver damage and certain types of cancer.

You would be safer to stick with permethrin or pyrethrum products.
And before you go out and buy more pestene , do a little research. It has been linked to Parkinson's disease .

Yikes!! All around big yikes!!

Ok so I need something to treat lice. In fact the more parasites it treats, the better. I can't use DE because I have bees.

Tee tree oil, mixed with a little eucalyptus oil.
Lice and mite both hate it.
A good option is tea tree cat shampoo add about 5 drops of eucalyptus . If you give your chooks a warm bath in the stuff for about 10-20 mins(Don't let them drink it) and dry them with a hair dryer it will kill almost any external bugs they have.

Try and find a pyrethrum surface spray I cleaned and sprayed my coop and boxes. Then put in fresh bedding which I changed everyday re spray after 7 days. Worked well. I also chucked out the eggs for a week or two after last spray.
