Totally agree with you Fancy.. I've only ever used surface spray when I have an outbreak (thanks to broody hens). Also good to spray on hand and feet with so I don't get wonderers crawling all over me

I use cheap one litre supermarket type insecticides which i spray the coops with. To treat the perches I mix that with oil so it doesnt evaporate so quickly and paint it on the perches.

Fancychooklady, I will be going out tomorrow to buy some of the woollies surface spray! Thanks also for the link on mites and tip regards spinosad which is mentioned in the link. I have just realised that I said the chicks had lice when I should have said mites, as they scratch themselves a bit. Maybe they don't need to be treated seeing as they are so young?

Ashburnham, what oil do you mix the incecticide with to paint on the perches? Would linseed oil or decking(Tung oil) be ok?

Having had the mites bite me when my chickens had them it was awful, I just wanted to scream from the itch most of the day. I'd treat anything that had them, it's no fun. Just be careful extra careful you get dosages right if they are young.

Your birds will be much happier with the timber under foot. Woolworths brand surface spray , it contains permethrin , spray the perches and the birds as required. The best $2 you will ever spend.

Good question appps. Chicks spend a lot of time scratching and preening. Lice will also impact the overall health of your chicks and should be treated too.

I use old cooking oil. Almost any oil will work.

I haven't actually seen any mites, they seem to stop a lot and scratch their necks and under wings (with their beaks). So assumed it was mites. If I were to look closely for them what wld I look for? When we pick the chick's up for a cuddle we don't get any itches or bites. They are all thriving and healthy. So maybe it's not mites but just normal chick behavior? This is the first time for hand rearing we have used a broody hen in the past.

I'd spray them anyways and the house they live in to be on the safe side. You will see little bugs on them if you have a close look. They are tiny but it wont be hard to spot.
