What!?!?!? I don't remember them being that blue and that georgous. Love them. Do they have the same nature as the Wheatons. They are just lovely. Are you selling POL's or eggs?

I have two blue orps (getting on a bit now and one has one eye). I just love anything blue/lavender that has a nice nature.

And I hope you little Belgian is a girl too. Good luck with her.

Omg a frizzle baby!!!

Hey Ash, goodluck with the headcounts!

Cute as teila.

OMG OMG OMG! Yay!!!!! Just as i was wondering whether to give up hope, Miss Vonte is broody!!!! Let them out this morning, all seemed normal, by the time i got home i pretty much went straight out to replace food/water, and shut them in. Collecting eggs, as usual i went to the first 2 nesting boxes, expected to see nothing, oh, theres one egg there. Moved on and went to automatically grab the stack in the next one and BAM! Theres a chicken there! Lol.

Instantly got super excited!! Went and got the eggs id saved for a broody and chucked them straight under her. Didnt know when i should have done it but i was just so excited it had to be then! Lol. So when do I move her to the seperate brood pen? Straight away or do i give her a few days and make sure she stays on them or???

Was just saying the other day i thought shed make the best mum :) strange that my RIR went broody before my LSs tho..

YAY!!!!

That's been happening to me a bit lately. Go to grab an egg in the dark and get a handful of feathers..

I've never had much luck moving them far. It all depends on the girl. I've learnt to make sure she's settled before putting the eggs under her. When I do move them I make sure they are well and truly clucky first and I keep everything I can the same like moving the nesting box with her. I've lost some nice eggs because the chook kept getting off after the move. Do you have access to an incubator in case she does.

Good luck.

Pe-ewwww had my first rotten egg. Opened the incubator to add water and the smell hit me. Picked up the one I thought was getting a blood ring the other day and took a wiff then took it straight out to the bin. I now get when you guys say you will know if you have a rotten one!

Thanks @MyHaven. No dont have an incubator and dont wanna use one either. Its broody or its nothing lol. Dont want to lose all those beautiful eggs of course but i guess ill have to wait and see what she does. Seemed happy to take all the eggs i gave her straight away and that was the first night she was nesting so hopefully thats a good sign. Only time will tell i guess!

From my Christmas hatch of Belgians I have a frizzle. So cute. While it is not standard for a belgie to be frizzled it is still adorable. I have quails hatching this morning 5 out so far and a few marans and Belgians from my own girls then this long on going hatch will be over. Then it will be time for a clean and restock.

My fourteen year old daughter has just seen this photo and her words were- Quote "Cuteness overload! Ca- boom -aww!"

Good luck! I hope she's a stayer! Having a broody is so much easier than this hand raising bizo

I agree. I think if you are doing it all the time and have a good setup for growing them out like Ash and some of the others it would be okay but for those of us who only do a small hatch once in a while can't beat letting the broody do all the hard work :)

Satay, Teila and Kleonaptra, thank you for your replies and advice. It is much appreciated:):)
After reading lots online about the dangers of treated pine (i.e.arsenic leaching), I have given into paranoia and swapped out 3 of the top rungs with untreated pine. Will calk gaps and oil the wood tomorrow. Have also bought some metal cutting blades to go on the grinder for cutting the metal sheets to put around the base of their yard. Thanks again! Always gladly get feed Back from other chook keepers :D

Yes I abandoned the idea too years ago..we used them for cat trees. Even wrapped in carpet, I was too paranoid about arsenic leaching. I will have to get up pics of my big ol gum tree branches. I get all my wood thru scrounging. I also meant to mention, in building a new pen, I used a staple gun and some heavy bits of wood to secure the bottom, ground level wire. Usually I dig a little trench and put the wire in it, but didn't have time for this one
