Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Gorgeous pic devinandfeather .. congratulations on a good hatch and hopefully more soon.

Wow Pugg that does look uncomfortable; she appears to be determined

Good luck with the hatch.

Sorry to hear you have been out of sorts ChristieB. How sweet that Padma gets to be a mumma also.

I have a question about flock dynamics, probably not for those with larger flocks but maybe smaller flocks or multiple, separated flocks.

The obvious ranking in my flock is:

Matriach = Cilla just over 2.5 years old
2IC = Dusty also just over 2.5 years old
Next Blondie at just over 1.5 years old
Then LuLu who is turning 2 in December
And then the two little ones, KiKi and Crystal who at 7 months old have settled into
KiKi
Crystal at the bottom

Before the little ones, the ranking was set in concrete and even with the little ones, it has been stable, after they sorted out between them who was going to be bottom

So basically Cilla tends to boss everyone under her. Dusty the same but does not try and boss Cilla. Again, same with Blondie, boss of everyone under her but submissive to those above. You get the idea, so on down the order.

However, over the last week, I have seen Blondie [#3] submitting to KiKi [#5] and KiKi appears to think she is higher in the ranking than Blondie BUT KiKi [#5] is still submissive to LuLu [#4] and LuLu [#4] is still submissive to Blondie [#3].

Funnily enough it is a hard question to phrase and I hope it makes sense .. Do others see the definite structure in their flock or do you also see this scenario where #5 can be boss over #3 but not #4 and #3 can be boss over #4 but not #5?

Or, do you think #5 could be taking on #3 which might automatically give her ranking over #4?

Hope that makes sense

Satay --- that is hopeful news, for sure.

We have lost 3 Golden Retrievers and 1 German Shepherd - all to cancer in the past.  Plus 4 of my past 15 cats.

Goldens are renowned for it - 60% of Goldens deaths are as a result of cancer.    So I know how you must be or have been feeling.   Gutted.  ....

I so do hope and pray that Zeus only has tendon troubles and nothing else.    As long as he is pain free, eating well and is 'normal' in being happy etc., that is the main thing.

What breed is Zeus ?   I think you mentioned his breed soooo many pages back, but don't know how to find quickly any previous posts.  And my memory is cactus !!  :/

Best of good wishes and hefty wellness vibes going out to you and Zeus.

Cheers .... Anniebee

Thanks anni and everyone else for the kind words for zeus. He is a border collie cross Doberman cross lab so a mix. He is in nature like a border collie. He is doing well so ill keep everything crossed . The meds the vet has him on to reduce the swelling seem to be helping. He is able to slowly walk small steps with his leg this morning. Zeus goes everywhere flat out so running etc are still no problem as he just uses the other 3.

Here is my Wyandotte, I was a bit worried about putting her in with the others because she's a lot smaller, but she just ran up to them, gave them all a peck as if to say "I'm the boss here now", the others all ran away from her so I threw some hulled oats on the ground so they'd all have a scratch together which they did, and now they're all happily living together. The lady I get my wyandottes from has had a 100% rate of hatching girls, so I thought with my luck I hope I haven't got her first boy.

Grit for the chicks. Is there anything in chick starter or now I'm giving them a little grass time do I Need to add some? They aren't really able to get to the dirt just the grass blades and anything else they can get their beaks on sigh.

And cocci strikes again. Had heaps of rain lately. Just got the new off ground chick pens sorted yesterday but was too late for an ara and a polish chick.and possibly an ara pullet and a fw maran cockerel. Im treating both with slim hopes for success. :-( i hate the wet...
