Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. My menagerie is quite large and consists of dogs, a cat, parrots, fish, reptiles, a spider, and of course the chookyducks as my partner calls them.

My duck has fully accepted the older duckling that i gave her on hatching day to foster. Its quite a bit larger than the ducklings she hatched out but she doesnt seem to care. Meanwhile my hen who hatched out 1 chick from 10 eggs makes a decent mum after all.

Am wondering tho. My kids are itching to hold the ducklings but georgie has her mama duck cranky pants on. If i let them hold the ducklings will georgie get used to it and calm down or will she lose her mind and possibly abandon the babies?

Been away a few days and pandemonium breaks out. 4 pages to catch up on but don't have time currently. I hear Patsy is ok but no baby yet. And I just got home from Kiama !

Sorry Lanaducky I don't know anything about ducks. You could try posting your question on the BYC duck forum if no one else on the Aussie thread has any advice.

Hi All,

Teila I lol when I read about your other girl doing the "nah, nah, nahh..nahhh.." Dance on top of Cilla's cage. That's chook justice for you - someone's always got to be at the top ;)

Today I put the "all weather adult bucket feeder" into the pens with the girls. They can just reach inside and are happily eating away. They look so cute with their heads in a bucket and their fluffy little butts sticking out.:lau

Also wanted to share this pick of their coop and really large yard area ...

It has plenty of shade, hiding spots, nice cosy hidey holes, etc.... But their favourite resting place is on top of my (not very successful) compost heap!!!

Couldn't get a pic of all of them 'lolling' around in there as they jump out as soon as they see me in anticipation of food. They are so funny!

So long as she feels threatened she will defend her ducklings, it's pretty much the same for most species. Get the kids to sit down on the ground , with a handful of food and entice her to them. Most animals are less intimidated once you get down to their level . A little time each day will soften her and so long as the kids stay calm she won't consider them as a threat to her young. Depending on the age the children , it is best not to allow toddlers to handle extremely young birds as they don't know their own strength and can get a little carried away with the cuddle.

Hi guys. Came home from Comps with 2! bantams. An Old English & a Wyandotte. They were together, 18 weeks. Got both because i thought it would be a safer introduction of younger, small hens. Have used wire to section off run of coop. Both ends have doors. Will giv the time to get used to one another then supervise free range before opening it all up for the pecking order to sort out. Ruby is the only bigger hen (3/4 leghorn) so i doubt she will lose her Godess status. All advice from you is most welcome! Gotta figure out their names now.:)

Oh I just have to mention that my daughter thinks it's hilarious that the only 'social media' I participate in is BYC!
Apparently being a 'chook' enthusiastic is not cool

I told her that it was an educational, ideas exchanging, forum with good humour as a bonus

"Sigh" ....teenagers... "Eye roll" ,etc...

Love that post - and good for you. I am more attracted now than ever, to BYC - the advice, the fun and friendliness. Not sometihng one gets on social media ( which I dabble in too often - and get into verbal punch-ups occasionally - Facebook !! ).

Social media frankly, can be a real bum-mer .... can make a person rather depressed, as it is becomes a haven for posting nasties that we really don't need to know about. Amazes me how many people use it for serious venting, and producing ghastly grim pix and articles.

We need more laughter and friendship, not more worry.

And yes ..... teenagers ! ... but they do grow up - be patient. They will learn - eventually. !!

Cheers .........
