Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

We have ...........AN  EGG !!   A well formed, blue egg from Mindy.  A little rough / sand papery at the top, which I am not going to try and find out if it is fragile or not, but I suspect it would be.    I am not expecting anything earth shattering, just because she has laid one.    Just have to wait and see, I guess - and continue with the calcium for a few  weeks or so, as well.

However, I don't for one moment think it was the calcium she had just prior .... that would not have made much difference at this point in time, but I know she was delirious about her special 'chook mix' ... and ate the whole danged lot in one go.    You would think I starve them, the way they go at that stuff.   But they are never without their layer pellets - ever.

.........

We also have CROWS. :lau     Every time I hear them ( as of two days back - a small 'murder' of them in the back street ) ... I think of Teila, and her lot of evil black *********'s.

Gee thanks Teila,  for sending them southbound ... ha ha ha haaaaa.....

First time they have ever congregated around near here.  hmmm.   I don't much like the sound as it is morose, a morbidly sad sound.   Especially on the downward notes !!!     I just hope they don't bother the girls too much.   Miss Ruby dog couldn't give a hoot.

That's about it for now ...... enjoy the remainder of the week.

Cheers .. .. ..

Yay. Annie are they actually consuming the pellets ? I only ask because my silkies won't touch standard sized pellets and I had to switch to ' micro pellets '.
CROWS....... Yesterday I went to inspect my silver laced Wyandotte 's nest and after much protest and spilt blood ( mine ) , I managed to lift the hen only to find that the crows had raided her nest and left her with just 1. I got busy and stapled netting over the top of the doorway in an attempt to keep them out and gave her another clutch of eggs.
My poor little Coro chick had a red butt and momma Silkie pecked at it and drew blood so I had to keep it in my shirt for a few hours yesterday till the bleeding stopped and it looked less angry. Washed its butt, smeared some anusol on it to numb the pain and before I put him back I sprayed his vent with Terramycin. I decided to put him in with my little ' chickey ' , she hatched some BLRW and seemed happy to see her new addition with its bright blue butt. ( Terramycin ) .
We are dying silkies for our local show today and it's time to wash Rosie pony for the petting nursery. :)

Saw this and thought of you Kym .

:celebrate Congrats on the egg anni.

We said goodbye to our beautiful ' rusty ' today. The transporter arrived at 6-30 am to take him to Victoria where he will begin the next chapter in his life after racing. After 6 years of loving this boy it has been a long day, up at 4-30 to feed him so that he had enough time to digest his brekky before his journey. It's hard not to get sentimental over such a lovely boy. I won't get much sleep tonight worrying about his journey on the spirit but that's all part and parcel of owning animals.

satay there have been lots of good and bad stories regarding Vet’s and while I am happy that I have now found what I consider to be a good Vet, I have had experience with the not so good also. I will not go into details but just wanted to say that I am pleased you are asking questions; do not let a Vet who may be trying to stick to an appointment schedule, ‘push’ you out the door until you have asked all the questions. I am pleased also that you are sticking to your guns. Thinking of you

Love the Simple Tips!

sjturner79 I love Shadow’s and Streak’s colouring.

Meeka3 Galaxy is beautiful!

Fancy That ‘To My Dog’ was lovely. Parting with Rusty would have been hard and you are also in my thoughts. His new owners are very lucky to be getting a horse who was obviously so very well looked after and loved. I hope he does well on his new adventure.

Those Evil Black Butted B*&^%’s !!!

Sounds like a busy day at your place today.

devinandfeather that little one is a cutie and so so tiny!

Pugg congratulations on the hatch starting and the little one you have decided to keep is adorable.

Anniebee congratulations on the egg!!!

I have new allies in the Battle of The Crows .. a couple of yellow headed, brown birds have moved into the back tree .. I do not think they are Myna’s as the head is pretty much all yellow. Anyways, whenever the Crows land in the garden, these birds chase them off!

So, KiKi is officially broken and because LuLu has gone straight to ‘motherhood’ the nest boxes are once again only being used for laying.

I have an on site IT Workshop tomorrow and Friday …. Tut, have to dress up 2 days in a row!

Hey Friends .. I need your help please?

If you remember, last year I had to deal with what I thought at the time and to this day was a severe mite/lice infestation; but now I have my doubts. If you remember, these things were all over the coops walls and the lawn and any time I stepped outside I had to wash all my clothes, have a shower, our bedding got washed daily the coop got stripped down and washed thoroughly for a couple of weeks in the row, Neem Oil and Pestene [I know some do not like Pestene and there are side effects, possible Parkinsons] all over the place etc. I could not put my washing basket on the lawn without it picking up heaps of these tiny little things.

Eventually, any trip outside to near the coop or on the lawn the numbers of these things dwindled and then were gone. That was November last year.

Since then, as I never wanted to go through that again, while I practiced bug deterrent methods before, I am now paranoid. The coop gets stripped and Neem Oiled every weekend … I have deep litter dust in the run and as you know, I cover the run at any sign of rain so that I am not dealing with damp earth; the nest boxes get dusted with Pestene .. the girls have access to 3 or 4 dust baths and they are checked regularly. Granted I do not actually dust them.

So, nothing until now! I go out into the garden this morning, feed and water the gals as per usual, come back in and notice I have a couple of these little bugs on me …. Oh gees no .. not again!

So, I check the coop .. nothing .. I check the nest boxes .. nothing .. I checked an egg that Cilla has just laid .. nothing.

Then I start to think, is it mite/lice I am dealing with? If these things are bad enough that they are in the lawn and around the coop, surely I am going to see evidence of them in the coop, nest, egg etc?

Hubby has noticed a couple of bites and is a bit itchy. He does not pick the girls up at all and he usually sits with them on the deck except in the afternoon when he sits on the lawn with them and hands out meal worms.

Is it a coincidence that it is the same time as last year?
Could I be dealing with some other critter that is not chicken related?

These things are tiny and do not fly but while I can see them moving, they are too small to really make out what they look like.

PS. I will check the girls and dust them after work today.

At this time of the year crawlies are most active and you could be worrying for nothing. Try to get a pic , at least then you can enlarge it and then we can attempt to identify them. :)

Beautiful boy, think positive thoughts, he will be happy :)
Exciting news! One chick under my broody is finally starting to hatch! :weee I've decided to keep this little cutie as well
Yay!!
To - - - - tandykins, Fancychooklady, satay and RodneyRooster : So many stories here about vets and their various attitudes, and the loss of precious much loved pets. We have excellent vets ( the best, most loved vet. retired from the practice several years back now ) .... and the remainder have excellent attitudes, dealing with animal 'clients' both medically and with their bedside manners for the owners. Except maybe for the vet who does most of the complicated surgery there. He's a bit like a lot of human meds. surgeons - not much of a communicator. Another vet is very laid back ... talks a lot about his experiences in vet practice, his own pets etc., and will open a conversation when an animal is approaching the danger list with the words " well now, this doesn't look too flash " ... and then proceed to be upfront in a kindly manner. He doesn't care how many questions I ask, and I ask a lot ( as you can imagine !! ;) ). All anyone can do is love and care for their pets who cannot communicate where their pain is ( cats especially are good at masking pain ) ... but our own instincts, borne of that love and caring, will pretty much be always spot on. Trust your instinct, and your knowledge of your pet - always. .... RodneyR .... A big ooops at taking up almost a whole page of posts a few pages back. Trouble is, I cannot get the multi "-" to work properly for me, so when I would like to answer each individually, it all gets a bit rambly - one after the other. ( as well as making small comments in ovations. ) Maybe I should just :duc !!! .. tee hee. ( not ruddy likely, most might say ). Busy thread this. Blessings all .... Anniebee
Haha all good dont do that - although i agree i dont think u could! My husband works at an abattoir so that is the one thing he could tell quite well is when an animal is in pain, from their eyes :-(
Just found this one, had to share.
