Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks they should be fine if they are the same size as and old English bantam chick then I will be fine as she has raised banyan chicks before will make sure water isn't to deep and yeah will keep updated

Firstly, I have to say my heart goes out to the bush fire victims. I hope there are no more losses. I can say no more than that on your ordeals.

Chicken hatch problems. I normally hatch under cluckies to avoid issues but I am not having luck ATM.

Has anyone ever had this problem before?

Yesterday morning I was letting the girls out when I spotted under my clucky an egg just visible. So I took a look. It was open on the side exposing the chick inside which was not even dry. I could see the unabsorbed yoke and disposed of the egg/chick. They are due to hatch tomorrow. I put it down to accidental breakage. But last night when I got home from work I was checking on everything and the same thing happened. So I took this egg/chick inside to take a closer look under light to see if I could work out what was going on. When I took this photo - Sorry my iPad is old and the quality isn't that good - I saw the heart beating and the poor thing move. I did what I could but it didn't survive and when I broke it out of its shell once again I could see it's yolk was not absorbed. In the photo above I had removed only a small section of egg about the size of a 5cent coin.

I have removed the two remaining eggs and put them in an incubator.

The hen was still defending each egg. She is very defensive and was showing signs of stress beyond the normal cranky cluck. This morning she was still looking for her eggs so I gave her some fake ones which she immediately settled on. If the surviving eggs hatch I'll give them back to her.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

If she is in with other hens when they come into the nest box she will be inclined to ' muscle down ' on the eggs . Standing her ground against possible ' egg snatchers '. I've had this happen with my coronation Sussex. The chick in the egg cup that I saved last year was far enough along to save , but there were others that I couldn't help. I pop them under silkies now , they just seem to be better mums and of course they aren't as heavy . If the remaining eggs hatch she will more than likely be a great momma. :)

Also wondering I have 14 turkeys due to hatch later this week and was thinking my lavender Orpington didn't hatch anything yet and if nothing hatches is it ok to put the poults under her or not because my last hatch Di ed but it was because of the fact that there were chicks there and and they got a disease but anyway she will not have any chicks with her so just her and poults

Some people say that you can raise turkey and chickens together, but you do run the risk of them contracting blackhead. The poults also have a higher protein requirement than your hen, could be making a ' rod for your own back ' .

I wonder if as they are starting to peep and pip she is pecking at them?

Edited to add just saw fancys reply. That makes sense, especially since she seems to be so bent on defending them.

That does make sense and the crows have been trying to get into the coop.

I just can't believe that she has had such bad luck. Hopefully she'll be rewarded with the two remaining. We will know tomorrow.

Cheers

Good morning Friends

MyHaven I am sorry to read of your losses and hope the remainder of your hatch goes well and your determined broody has some bubbies to care for.

Thank you for yet another reason to hate Crows!

I have lost track and I am not sure if Blondzilla is spending Day 5 or 6 in the broody breaker today and Cilla is on Day 4 or 5.

Blondie has not been as bad in that during free range time, as long as she has no access to a nest box, she potters a little in the garden with the flock. However, after spending the night on the roost, I find her pancaked on the nest box cover each morning and into jail she goes.

Cilla, on the other hand, is taking out her frustrations on the flock and has no qualms bashing up all and sundry

Anyways, plans for today are to give Crystal a bath, she has a dirty butt which I believe is from the lice.

I haven’t seen any more but I will still give the coop another strip and clean today and the gals will get another dusting before bedtime just as a precaution.

They are due for a worming also but that will have to wait until later in the week when the temps are forecast to be a bit lower .. I will treat them for two days this time to ensure they drink it .. not so sure the little munchkins did last time

Oh the dreaded ' death birds ' ! That will more than likely be the cause of her ' muscling down ' on her eggs. The Vermon bully my Broodies until they vacate the nest. They will take the eggs , no matter what stage of development they are.
Teila I envision Elma Fudd with his rifle on shoulder singing , ' a hunting we will go , a hunting we will go ' , every time you post about your battle with the ' black Demons ' .

Lol Fancy …. I could be guilty of being a tad obsessed where those Evil Black Butted B&*^%d’s are concerned

The one I felt sorry for with the ruffled feathers, limp etc has recovered so we are back on warring terms now!

See, they are evil! They are impervious to injury and heal rapidly .. I am telling you, they are evil and supernatural! lol

Lol, I have had similar images come to mind Fancy when I read Teila's accounts. Teila have you seen the black and white crow that is around. It has a bit of white behind each wing - weird. Definately a crow.

While clucky but Before Cagney, the poor Barney having the bad luck, got the eggs she was leaping about a metre into the air to send the crows off. They didn't risk it when she was off the next. I hate the pests.

Egg update: There was a lot of chirping from one rescued egg last night but today still no pipping that I can see on either. I hate not being able to check them in an incubator.

Fancy I meant to say I like hatching with Silkies too, but I need another one now the fox got mine.

A work colleague got extra eggs from Western Australia and offered them to me. I have a week along and under my blue Australorp the following. White auracanas, birchan, cuckoo and copper marans and dbl barred p rocks. Also I'd already picked up locally speckled Sussex and buff orps. It will be guess who's who when they hatch.

Cheers
