Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I was almost glad to read this appps .... helped me to be less frustrated.    No offense --- I know you are just as frustrated as I was.

Wormed my 3 - and one is definitely wormed ( little Mindy Araucana ) .... she drank almost the lot.   The other two big girls ????   :smack Also didn't touch a drop.   So I added some ice to it, thinking perhaps it was warm to them  ( although it still felt cool to me ).   They had a few sips, and that was it.   Being the following day was sort of hottish, I got a bit frantic, knowing they must have been as thirsty as all get out, so tipped the lot out - delivered the fresh water, and they drank, drank and drank ....the  little 'B's' .....

Next time I am going to put it into double or triple the water - they go through a lot of water, so may be able to fool them that way.   I don't think they liked the colour ( pink ) or  the taste.

Also asked the local stock and produce retailer / owner, if I could mix the appropriate amount in with their rice mixture I make, and she said yes.   Would like to know what others think also of that advice ?     It is Levamisole - Aristopet Poultry Wormer.

I think I will go with the super diluted drinking water, so that it is less concentrated, and more just like plain water.   And let them drain it dry ( under constant observation of course ).

And oh yes - ya can't tip water on the ground for heavens sake ... they will chase it and drink it ... they really are sad cases at times. !!! :barnie

Cheers ......

Hi Annie, you can make the wormer up and poor it over the feed, but don't dilute it down as that will render it worthless. Honestly , if I only had a few chooks I would consider worm tablets. At least then you know that they are getting the required dosage. I alternate and use panacur by syringe and that is very time consuming with my lot.
Just had the pleasure of attending the local Christmas carols and our daughter had 2 solos. Proud mommy . :)
Now it's pouring with rain and that forecast for snow doesn't seem so ridiculous.

To satay, appps and cluckcluckluke ....

Thank you for your replies about chickens going 'half broody'. Good to see you again cluckcluck.

.........

Mindy seems to have settled down a little now - and did not tell me off for taking her egg today. AND she had kicked the dummy egg elsewhere, and was not sitting on it when laying.

So ( hopefully ) she is past a bit of mini broodiness, this time. Neither of my big girls have ever been broody. !! ( RIR and Welsummer ).

Will just keep an eye on Mindy .... she had been trying to dust bathe on dirt that had set like concrete, so I gave her some fresh dirt on her favourite spot, to bathe in, ---- which she proceeded to eat !! ... and then got on with the dust bath. She's a little odd.

Cheers all .... have a great weekend.

Thanks so much Fancy for your advice about not diluting the wormer. I will ask about worm tablets too. Would prefer syringe actually --- sounds a good way to do it. But where to get panacur is the thing, especially in this neck of the woods. On line it is extremely expensive, and I cannot go down that track money-wise.

Will definitely make up the appropriate mix next time, and give it to them in their special rice treat - which is a dog bowl full. Might use bread instead of rice, as it would soak up the Levamasole mix much better than rice would. I have sheep drench here, given to me by my Vet - but have never used it as there are two types - one is ok, the other isn't. While I trust my Vet, he is not an avian expert, so I was a bit dubious about that. He said it will kill any parasites that reside - inside or out ???

Again thank you .....

Cheers - and hope the weather isn't too cold for you, for this time of the year ?

A mix of bread and rice would probably work, a tin of sardines in the mix will certainly throw them off the scent. ;)
Panacur can be expensive but I have it on hand for the goats and fenbendazole treats more worms than others.
Just watched a video clip of snow falling at Great Lakes northern Tasmania . Hoping for nice weather for state titles tomorrow.

Hey all

Yeah they are good. I have some Marans now and am happy with them. Things have slowed down in the chicken department as I have yr 12 and what not, but I'll definitely still keep some chicken as they look good in the garden and are nice to look after.

How are all your lot appps?

Mostly doing pretty good, we did loose one of our frizzle bantams to a goshawk though so their wandering ways have been curtailed slightly.

I have one doing year 12 now as well, hope you are getting more sleep than she is! She has already pulled a couple of allnighters to get assignments in and it's only been one term!

Yeah I think so.
At this time of year when many of my hens decide to start being broody, there are always a few that only put in half the effort. They will fluff up and walk around the yard squawking at everyone in sight (just like a normal broody) but they won't, or just for small amounts of time, sit on a nest. Usually in the next week or so they get the idea though and eventually go full broody.
I think it's because they see all the other broody hens and get royally confused on what to do with themselves. It's quite funny to watch.

Isn't the weather odd. Fancy has rain and snow and we have had a week of nearly 40c everyday with yesterday getting to 42.7c. It is lightly raining this morning.

yes, ours is mad too, but its 37 deg one day 24 the next. Its up and down all over the place, one day you are in singlet tops the next the kids are wearing jumpers to school.

Good morning Friends

Lol ChristieB 6 .. 26 .. not a big difference

appps with the Kilverm it does have a slight colour tinge but I do not think that was the issue with LuLu, she did actually dip her beak in, took a sip and then shook it off .. I think it was a taste thing .. anyways, I eventually managed to get some into all of them.

May be if you use that one again, put it into a similar shade bowl?

cwrite good save and what a little cutie!

Luke good to hear things are going well with you and yep, some chicken time is a good break from Yr 12 stresses.

Fancy I would be a proud mommy also .. 2 solos is awesome.

Tee hee .. talking about weather .. we are in there somewhere

I have nothing but praise for the Urban Utilities guys .. we had water restored within plenty of time for everyone to have showers and get off to work on time.

Very weird .. you know how KiKi was broody for 4 days and then just gave up? Well, she laid an egg yesterday; never had that happen before

Anyways, off to the feed store today to ensure I have enough chookie food to not worry until after the New Year and then off to Bunnings for some more Success … not sure what I am going to do after that, the weather is going to be very restricting I think, might just have to have a day off for a change and watch the cricket

The gals are quite happily scratching around in the run with the covers on, nice and dry.

Shame about your hawk problem. We've always had big raptors fly over our flock but they've never had the chance to take any chickens as we have a residential magpie family in the area that protect the skies furiously.

Im on holidays now actually which is fun. Didn't find term 1 much different from yr 11 but then again I've been told there is much worse to come.

Glad to hear Kiki went back to laying already for you. KC went broody yesterday but she is so easy to break, I moved the best box about 6 inches as now she not broody anymore. I thought about leaving her, but I have a possibility of 40 more babies before Christmas and already don't have room for what I've got.
