Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Nice little garden Telia, I hope it doesn't suffer from some overly enthusiastic gardeners of the chicken variety.

I was wanting some advice if anyone has any ideas. I'm moving house in a week now, and currently not all of my girls get along, I'd like to improve and ease tensions between specific offenders. We'll be building two brand new coups for them (one for the three big chickens, one for the three banty's) and pens when we get there. I'm hoping this along with a brand new territory that no-one has dibs on will help. I'll run down the situation as it is now, and any tips on how to further increase harmony at our new house would be appreciated :)

The main offenders for arguments are Annabelle and Iris, though Annabelle actually seems to boss everyone she can. Annabelle is a year old RIR hybrid and ranked number two out of six. Iris is five month old Speckled Sussex, and is number three out of six. Annabelle I think is fighting to ensure she doesn't slide further down the line, she was number one until she got sick and had to be quarantined. She chases and sneaks up on Iris to peck her from behind. I've used the look but don't touch method, and from that my alpha seems fairly ok with Iris, but not Annabelle. Annabelle also chases the three bantams I have as well, basically everyone below her she chases with the intention of pecking.

All of the bantams get along quite well, Beatrice who is last in the pecking order out of the six, due to age and size (she's a three month old d'uccle) has been accepted by the other two bantams, again using the 'look don't touch' method. However, Iris who is also best friends with the other two bantams I have, didn't fully warm up to her and will chase her. Iris does also peck her friends too, but overall they get along fine still. Bantams are kept separate during the day and are let out in the afternoon for supervised free range, but they can interact through the fence with the others. I also try to use noise as a deterrent to break up fights. I got a bit slack with that, but will try to use it more again now. Funnily enough, Ada who is alpha, and Beatrice don't have any problems. Bea can walk past Ada with no worries. I'd like to keep Ada as alpha if possible, she's calmer and a little more tolerant of the others than Annabelle was (still is) now she's established herself. All the girls are very friendly towards me, and can be picked up, though some like cuddles more than others.

I'd like to take the bantams over first, then the larger chickens. The move will happen on the 4th, so everyone will be moved on that day. I can let some out first, then the others, if that may help. I think problems here are mostly due to the older girls not wanting to share the yard, despite having more than enough space. Anything I should be mindful of either in preparation for the move and after? Thanks everyone :)

There is a pecking order in every flock, without it the flock shows weakness. One way to cut the bossy ones down is to put them into solitary confinement for a week. Once you reintroduce them it can take them awhile to work their way up through the ranks, but RR are renowned for their aggression.

I moved 12 months ago. Nothing changed in order of pecking once they settled. But because they were cramped while their new run was finished they became more aggressive. Like Fancy said, I constantly had to isolate my Buff and light Sussex particularly from my silky. It was only a temporary fix. It never lasted long term. And I ended up rehoming them because of it.

So my advice would be - before you move make sure you have everything ready in the new place and don't make do if it's not finished.

AB can I suggest you just try to download the BYC App - free in the App Store onto your iPad. It won't use much of your data as it is a mobile site. You can always uninstall it if you're not happy with it. It just might get you through the time your PC is with the techs.

Thanks heaps MyHaven .... .have downloaded the app. for BYC to my iPad. ( the way I came to do that defies description, was from searching 'app' on BYC, and a thread popped up with a link in someones' comment on a thread, that went to a secondary site for the app download !! - but something worked anyway - & I hope, continues to work !! ) .... am on my PC at present, and it is behaving itself, but needs an overhaul very soon, if not sooner !!!

.

Now all I have to do is have the iPad / BYC accept my ID and password and all will be well. Thing is, the iPad, is not initially registered in my name - I am a secondary user. It was given to hubby as a gift from his employer and they registered him ( ?? ) - but I am the only one who uses it - ( he is NOT into technology whatsoever - has enough trouble with a company mobile phone

and the computers at his work ). I have found my way around it relying on Google to enable me to access various sites --- but Safari doesn't want to know me ( which is quite ok with me frankly ).

Would much prefer to access BYC, Gmail and Facebook etc., via the iPad anyway. I do have a lot of fun on that thing. Best thing since sliced bread.

Cheers and thanks...........

I need help too.

I have a dorking chick with one leg that looks splayed. It hatched sat/sun. I've never had a chick with splayed legs so I'm going by google pics. Anyway it is only one leg and looks splayed when "it goes out from under her" when she moves quickly. She can pull it up under her and stand normally - although hunched and she can walk normally on it slowly. She shows no distress when I examine it and I can move it every way it should without a problem and again she shows no distress.

Should I tape it?

No worries, but the app is like a PC, it doesn't matter who the hardware belongs to you can login just using your username and password. I hope this helps.
Cheers

Anniebee the issue you are having with Shockwave Flash crashing in Chrome appears to be common. Research indicates “it is related to the way Chrome handles Flash content. While other browsers call upon the Flash installation of the host system, Chrome includes an internal Flash installation. When everything goes smoothly, this isn’t a problem”

There is a article in ‘How to Geek’ on fixing this http://www.howtogeek.com/103292/how-to-fix-shockwave-flash-crashes-in-google-chrome/

Or, you could try using IE or Firefox when logging onto BYC and see if that stops it. MyHaven’s suggestion was a good one also.

FeatherBee I hope you are able to find someone to look after your featheries for a while.

If not, an option could be to contact a Rural Vet, Wildlife Carer, Sanctuary etc in your area; they may agist.

potato chip As you know, no more chickens for me, I have reached critical chicken mass which actually makes me quite the enabler .. if I can not have any more chickens, I can live vicariously through those I have enabled; enjoy the new chicken pictures etc

Speckles is adorable MullyAly

Thank you so much Teila. I have replied to MyHaven, and have downloaded the app. to the iPad. However, the crash / reload situation has just re-appeared ( 10 minutes into use on my PC, but only on here at BYC ).

I will certainly have a look at the link you have posted, thank you.

Google 'installs' on behalf of its' users, Java, Adobe Flash , Shockwave etc, whether we like it or not. ... I have not been successful in finding how to stop them doing that. Would prefer to manage those downloads and updates, myself - but cannot apparently, because my default browser is Google Chrome ( which is better than IE - for me anyway ) and I choose to stay with Google Chrome for now. .

And all the above is if we use Google Chrome.

I am loathe to go back to IE - as it has caused me nothing but problems in the recent past. There are some sites that don't want to know about Google Chrome, and revert to using IE - because that IS in my computer and available. All very complex !! To date, my poor old PC has handled most that is dished up to it !! Still needs a good clean out, re-application of a few software updates, drivers etc. - so when the $$$ are available, I will have it all done ( providing it doesn't crash completely in the meantime ). !!!

Cheers ...........

p.s. - just had a good read of that link you posted ... and have bookmarked it for further investigation. Made a lot of sense, and offered quite a few solutions - all of which I have to take time in understanding ( and most likely using ). Will try all that when I have accessed the sites I must ( like on-line Banking etc. ) .... and see where it goes from there .......... ta muchly.

Please indulge me .. I do not have a lot [any] visitors so wanted to share some pictures of my little stealth/raised vegie garden that the girls have not found yet. If you remember, I started it back in October last year and positioned it outside the kitchen window.

This was it then:

This is it now [forgive the reflection, taken through the window]:

That is fantastic Teila .... well done.

Phew! Thought we had lost our pet bunny. Went to put some frozen water bottles in with him because it's a stinker here today and the cage was empty! We let him into a little covered area of a day sometimes so he must have escaped that yesterday and nobody realised and locked his cage up empty. Searched everywhere but no luck then just leaving to pick the kids up and spotted him under a bush in the front garden!

Saved from having to break the news he was gone!

So very glad to hear of that happy outcome. " Stay put, bunny" .... and don't go freaking out your loving owners.
