MyHaven ......... :hugs

That is just terrible news.    I so feel for you, for the losses you face, for the worry you are dealing with . .....     Fancys' links contain a heap of helpful information .... found them very interesting.

I think the new task - building another run and coop is an excellent idea, as far away as possible from the current coops / runs.  The following link promotes natural remedies and preventions .... also an interesting read.  http://www.fresheggsdaily.com/2013/10/handling-contagious-illness-in-your.html  .... if you are inclined along those paths as well.

From the link mentioned by Fancy, it would appear that replacements can ultimately  be placed on 'the same farm', from clean stock.   So I am presuming it does not live in dirt, leaves etc. But in cleaning thoroughly all your areas for your chickens, especially for the hens you keep - I think I would also shovel the entire top part of the run right off, get rid of it, and perhaps spread new dirt from some other way off area of your property, or purchased dirt,  over the freshly  exposed ground.   Just to be on the safe side.

But your Vet knows much more about management of it all than I do ...

From what I have read - the only with-holding period is while medications are being administered, and I  would with-hold them for a couple of weeks after the end of treatment ( which I think is usual anyway ).   But then, they are not likely to be laying too much at this time.

My heart goes out to you, with this awful problem - but it can be managed.   Take heart from that.

Cheers  ....

Thanks, I'll check out that link. It can live in droppings for two weeks and a carcass for 12 months. The vet said I could depopulate and repopulate 3 weeks later. I'm not going to do that.

The withholding period for eggs for chickens on antibiotics is 1 month. In a commercial setting the eggs are never to be sold. I don't know about meat, not that that matters to me.

I did the roos yesterday. All but not my dorking roo chick I'm not ready to do him yet. He never had symptoms.

My strategy so far is:
I'm treating them all as carriers even if they never showed symptoms. (Including the ones that were never in contact with a sick bird. I'm sure my five year olds bio security skills aren't the best and regardless inevitably there will be accidental cross contamination)
I'm going to keep all the girls (unless council steps in) .
However if an individual relapses I will cull her.
If any show signs of kidney failure or severe uterine damage I will cull them also.

I'm getting about six eggs a day from the 17 laying age hens/pullets.
I have 9 POL
I have 8 that should stop squeaking soon
And 9 chicks that could be 7 girls. Best ratio I've ever hatched.

I think for

Hard decisions. A closed flock is probably the best option , for now at least.
See if you can get some Virkon , I have it in tablet form it makes up 5 litres and you can spray everything, including the organic matter such as the ground .
Mine are all just starting to come back into lay so don't feel bad about 6 eggs a day.

I hope there are no more signs of sickness in your flock. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Luckys finally integrated fully. She is 20 weeks now, the others are 16 and 12 weeks I have got them on grower crumbles. Is that ok for Lucky if shes at the age to start laying. Or can I just give them all laying feed and grower crumbles and let them choose, Though I think they will probably only eat the layer as it seeds and pellets.

So very sad to hear of your loss Fancy  .... A magnificent bird - from baby to adult.

How strange and very distressing, that poultry can do that - simply pass away. ...

RIP King George .... and :hugs   to you Fancy.

.............

Thanks Annie, I think that KG may have had a heart condition, he was laying flat on his back as if he was dead before hit the deck. His hackle was up and he was in magnificent condition. I have 9 x of his babies in the brooder ATM and 3 are cockerels so at least I will be able to continue his line. I fear that none will have half the personality as he did though.
:(

Promising sign from Beatrice today, I went to pick her up and she squatted for me. Not that I'll be relying on her for eggs

, but first eggs are always exciting and something to look forward too. No sign from Esme yet though, and she's nearly 8 months. She'll get there though, I know some individuals start laying later. Oh, do D'uccles go broody much?

My granddaughter (3) says can we have one too it lookscute. Then she saw SilkieChickStars and said can we have them too! I really don't need another enabler.

But they are beautiful. Hopefully we will have 6 more babies by the weekend.

Ohh six little ones sounds wonderful! Make sure to post pics :D And my Mabel is just adorable, and so soft. She's really getting into cuddle time before bed. You may need to get an Araucana after all ;) Just think of how exciting it'll be for the grandkids to collect those pretty blue eggs! Yeah, I'm a pretty bad enabler, hehe.

Though on a practical note construction on the new coop which had stalled for a while, is now powering ahead. It's going to be big, secure, and built with the seemingly endless Queensland summer in mind. I'll try to post pics tomorrow. Getting the posts put in and the frame to support the roof of the run constructed at the moment. We were also busy clearing away tree branches and garden debris today, Ada and Annabelle were keen to help of course, should anything edible surface.

Looking forward to seeing your coop pics. I have been wondering about how we will go in summer myself.

Meanwhile, I knew Silkies were fluffy, but my chicks have some seriously crazy amount of fluff coming
