Hi from the Barossa Valley - just added a Muscovy drake & his mate to my family of 12 chooks - after a day of squawking and carry on all seems to be at ease - both are enjoying a couple of pools with parsley, spinach & various herbs & greens added to the pool - happy to hear any hints about treats - I've never had ducks before. No, for reason unbeknown to us the transporter missed the boat and they sailed last night.
Unfortunately today is a busy day and we will be out at a showjumping clinic. Yesterday the vet was here to remove the ' apsters ' staples. Little bit of proud flesh but she was very happy with his wounds. Scarlet had her teeth done and got micro chipped, all ready for the upcoming season.

Thank you for great advice - will try the peas - I had to laugh this morning - Mr Duck was standing on the chooks automatic feeder - I think it was a hint to hurry me up to feed him

Hi saassie I don't have ducks either though its something I have thought about. Welcome to a great site.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and the great advice, it has made this hatching less stressful especially with the one pipping at the wrong end. I still have one egg that hasn't hatched but the last hatched between 1-3am so I will give the other a bit longer before I check it.
I have 3 yellow chicks and 2 black, as I was given leghorn, light sussex and australorp. I'm guessing 2 aussie and we''ll see.

Luckysmum, that was some tense reading, catching up on those posts, but glad everything came through ok

I have helped it out and its doing fine so far. Stumbling around as they do bumping into each other. I just went very slow and used a wet cotton bud to make sure nothing was stuck. It all went well it pushed it way out when I'd gotten half the shell off. I put it back into the incubator to dry off. I still have 2 eggs to go 1 is zipping out now the other hasn't done anything yet. I put them in the incubator 3 weeks ago today. So I guess I will wait a day or so before checking the one that hasn't hatched. I want to put another batch in the incubator as quick as possible so they age difference isn't so big.

A hearty welcome to you saaussie .... you will enjoy your time here, wonderfully friendly people, and so much of interest to read.

Sorry - I have no idea about ducks, except for one wood duck lady and her babies who she must have hatched in the wood pile, and who proudly led her chicks across the garden, through the wire fence and to the nearest creek.

I was delighted but have never seen any in our back garden, since. Plenty down at the creek, and a family of them that lives a street away - always there at the house ( with the kids ).

They are currently happily picking their way around my little temporary coop while the big one is built.

The plan is to put these, the Silkies and the bantam lavender Araucana in all together when it is finished.
