Wonderful news that your flock is doing OK MyHaven!  Sorry to read about your house flooding; it was a lot of rain in a short period of time.

Welcome to the thread mustangrooster, lovely to meet you.   While I am not in the NT now, I did live there for three years after spending 12 months or so sailing a yacht up the West Australian Coast.  Loved Darwin, loved the lifestyle, loved the people .. hated the weather! 

Fancy congratulations on your 35[SUP]th[/SUP] wedding anniversary.  I hope hubby is OK now.

Good news in that the road works have finally finished, the traffic lights are in and no more earthquakes to upset the girls.

As I type, it is 11C .. brrrrr.  I do believe the wind last night was attempting to relocate us!

So I have what is probably a silly question …. Is it OK that Dusty has taken to drinking the water in the fish pond?

It is not like they do not have fresh water inside the run and also outside when they are free ranging but she has recently decided that pond water is the go!  The gold fish are swimming in it and they are still alive.  I also figure that the wild birds drink it but just wanted to check that it is not harmful to her?

All my chooks prefer dirty water or puddles to clean water in a dish

Hey fancy, what does an 8-10 week old silkie go for? Thinking at that age you couldn't be sure it's not a rooster either though she is saying hens. Lady selling them for $50 each on our local Facebook buy and sell. Kinda thought yikes! Not show quality or anything but she is getting a fair response to the add.

Wow- I'm surprised anyone way pay that for any silkie that's not a championship line. I just did, but it's a lavander and their quite rare on the mainland still, and both parents have won best soft feathers at shows.

I'm not an Australian, but a Brit living in Perth! With everything that's going on with the EU at the moment, glad my partner and are over here for now! We have no chooks as of yet, but will hopefully at some point next year (if we find a very nice and consenting landlord!) I've enjoyed looking through all your posts, and love the pictures! I'm a big bantam fan, and really hope for some pekin bantams one day. In the mean time, I'm still learning and doing my research. I'll just have to live vicariously through you all for now for my dose of chickens!

My girls used to drink from my fish pond. Did so for years until I found my beloved wheaton Tiddles drowned in it. I felt so guilty I hadn't thought of the danger and stopped it. Even when she was missing I looked everywhere and didn't think to check the pond.

Henriettasmum I never really thought of a chicken on a yacht. We tried with a cat for a while but he kept getting into trouble. A chicken would be great company and easier to keep I think. Monique looked to be having a great time!

Drowning can occur in a water trough, I've had a few ' near misses ' once the feathers are wet through they can't get themselves out of just a foot of water. Some strategically placed large rocks will go some way to making it a bit safer. Love the pics.

That seems to be one heill of a lot to be an asking price for a silkie chicken - without it possibly being sexed already. Have heard ( from others on there ) to be a bit wary of Facebook sellers.

Chooks are naturally meat eaters so I can see the logic, but I would rather use pet mince or something rather than blood and bone.

My poor little Molly RIR is in the middle of an all out moult. She looks like something from outer space. !!

Have noticed in recent days that her best friend Mandy, is missing many feathery bits ( not whole feathers ) from her tail. Like she has been 'chewed at'. And I do not believe its rats, as I have stopped those critters ( they have returned, even in flooding rains and freezing cold ). Have also noticed Molly picking at her own feathers which are still falling out at the rate of knots. Thought she had almost finished, but apparently not.

Protein burst required I think.

Will feed them separately tomorrow ( if I can manage safely through the mud and slush ) .... with more cooked meat for Molly ... plus some meal worms and a smidgin of cheese with Mums mash. The other two will get the normal warm "Mum" goodies, as they have finished their moults now.

The weather has upset them a lot - they remain mostly in the coops to keep warm. Near zero temps is not much fun for birds and animals. The currawongs have been singing up a storm ( literally ) .... and my girls don't much like them. They run back into their coops when the currawongs start up their racket.

Any thoughts on the feather thing, please ?
