Hopefully a Saturday morning chuckle for all:

I was not a fan of the My Family craze and even less of a fan when I saw them in the Newsagent at $9 a piece .. that is over $50 on that window! Anyways, back to stuff I understand ....

Henriettasmum good to read that your flock is recovering. I am a bit late to the party on the whole antibiotic and egg subject, but if the girls have had antibiotics the eggs do get tossed and not fed back to them. I was told somewhere that one month after antibiotics and before going back to eating the eggs is recommended.

On the meal worms, the gals get maybe 3 or 4 large ones each, every afternoon.

Congrats on your swap and new additions, they sound adorable and looking forward to seeing some pics of them.

Fizzybelle good to also read that Annabelle is in good spirits.

SilkieChickStar a bit late to this party also but yep moults, especially hard ones, definitely cause my gals to be pouty and out of sorts.

Aaaw satay I am so very sorry to read of your loss

As mentioned on my last post, the plumbers were here yesterday complete with excavator to fix the broken pipes. As always, it turned out to be a bigger job than expected in that the storm water drain was above the sewerage drain and so that had to be taken out to get to the sewerage.

The section of storm water drain they took out was completely blocked by tree roots so they will probably have to come back with another camera and check out the storm water drain more thoroughly. They could not do that yesterday because it was not on the work order.

Yesterday would not have been cheap; 1 x excavator and 4 x plumbers for 6.5 hours. I do not think we have heard the last of this and all the plumbing dramas are down to next doors’ thick row of extra large hedges and palm trees along the fence line.

The aftermath:

The Council are doing another kerbside rubbish collection so while I was watching that the girls were OK with all the commotion, I took the opportunity to clean out the shed and put our rubbish out on the front verge .. as per usual, I think there will not be much left by the time Council come to collect, half of it has already gone

Around lunch time, with the excavator still on site, I decided that the girls were OK with it and let them out for a lovely afternoon of sunshine. They stayed on the opposite side of the house, pretty close to me, but I was proud of how well they handled the strangers and noise.

I got woken around the 2AM mark by yet another cat fight in our back garden and it sounded very close to the coop and run. On closer inspection this morning, sure enough, tufts of cat hair right next to the run fence directly under the coop. If you remember, KiKi died suddenly on the night of a cat fight and fright could have been a cause. The girls are all OK.

As I have mentioned in the past and at the risk of climbing back on that soap box .. I am a responsible cat owner with indoor cats who have access to an outdoor run, keeping both them, the chickens and the wildlife safe and I am starting to get really p*ssed off with all these cat fights in our yard! I can only imagine how terrifying it must be for the gals to be sitting in the dark only 2 to 3 feet away from a full on howling, spitting, screeching cat fight

Yes, the foxes are calling early this year. Our Maggies are nesting too, I think an early spring may be on the cards! Hopefully not leading to a long summer. Last years was awful. Dry and hot. We had to buy water from November to the end of Febuary. The seasons certainly do seem to be shifting.

I hope it is early, I've finally got my vege garden flood proof and am dying to get some spring planting started :). Whereabouts are you? We didn't even have water restrictions last year.

hOI! (anyone get the reference?

you SunflowerTheBun.

If you have been peeping in ( stalking ?? - LOL ) ....then you will know what a great thread this is, now officially joined.

Melbourne ? Suburbs, outer suburbs, close by rural or way out rural ? I live in Upwey, Yarra Ranges Shire which is considered rural.

Cheers .........

Hi apps. I'm in the Yarra Valley in Victoria. Last summer was dreadful. Almost lost some birds from the heat, and no rain. Our neighbour grows apples and it was tough on him too. We want this wet winter to last as long as possible this year!!

Kay hi there. Hehe...not very rural, that's why I only have three. We are only allowed 6 chooks total where I live :( but we have an avairy of..let's say maybe 30 other birds? (canaries, finches, budgies and quails) I'm in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Pls call me Sunny, btw. :)

Teila ...

Re the cat fighting situation .... ( you sure do have trouble with intruders, - crows etc. ).

I have looked on the web, for a short time, and there are many kinds of deterrents for cats in your garden.

However, it depends ( for several types ) on e.g. if you have a fully wooden fenced garden ? ........ or a post and wire fence.

Bunnings have a variety of items and I think they carry motion detection sprinklers as well ( not cheap ) - however, that might impact on your chickens, depending on how far you allow them to roam when free ranging.

Natural remedies such as citrus peelings ( which the girls might eat !! ) .... and peppermint oil - but kept well away from the chickens. .

One thing I came across was the plant 'rue' .... which has a very pungent strong smell, is drought resistant - needs well drained soil and is a deterrent to dogs and cats. It might be difficult to find, except in a large nursery, as it is an old fashioned plant. It is essentially poisonous to many and much, so if it were to be used, it would need to be surrounded very widely by not one but two surrounds of wire. It is the smell that would deter the cats. And the girls could not get at it.

If your fences will stand it, wire rolls placed and secured on the top of the fences is an idea with rolls facing outwards away from your garden.

I do hope you find a way to stop these cat fights - they are horrid for chickens, and darn near as bad for humans to hear as well.

Good luck .....

Luckily, most people in my area don't have cats - not that I don't like them, I have had some beautiful cats when I lived in the suburbs of Sydney, but with lots of small birds cavorting in our trees we prefer not to have them around. Our problem is hunting dogs and the occasional dingo.

I wish we got a kerbside rubbish collection but I guess we have to be grateful that we at least get a garbage collection.

I loved your pic of the bears - very funny.

I meant to take some photos today of my new girls but I had to catch up on some work (if I want to get paid - I'm running late) and didn't get the time. However, we did get the three araucanas into their own pen which they seem to love. But went bananas when I put their new 'husband' in later. They flew straight onto the perch out of his reach and sat there all afternoon while he stalked down below. When his girl (who is having a love affair with a huge Australorp and wants nothing to do with him) was put into their pen, he made up for the lack of co-operation from the other girls. I feel a bit sorry for them, but I'm sure they will settle down. The black silkie has gone in with some of the other silkies and seems quite happy.

After having to use antibiotics, I had decided I would have to wait four weeks to be able to use the eggs and, of course, now is when the girls have all started laying again. I hate throwing them out, but better to be safe than sorry.

I have four babies (two white pure silkies and two cross cuties) in two brooders in the loungeroom - a week's difference in age. I have an almost full incubator so will be inundated with bubs soon.

I will try to get some photos up tomorrow.
