Hello from Monkerai, at the base of the Barrington tops in NSW.

Today is an exciting day: one of our hen's first eggs hatched last night: a cute little black chick. Peep peep.

I also am looking for some advice to diagnose what happened to one of our chooks that we dispatched after she appeared to be maybe eggbound. After looking at her insides I now suspect fatty liver. If anyone has any experience in this I posted a picture in the emergency health thread, and I'd love to know if it is, and, can we still eat the meat?

If she was egg bound there is a chance that she would also have had peritonitis, with that kind of infection most of the organs are involved. Fatty liver can be a result of high protein and too much starch in the feed, ie high corn diet. Welcome.

Good to have you on board 1000. As advised, stay away from the meat of an animal which has died of disease. I have almost completed my antibiotic treatment for respiratory infection. The Barnvelder is sounding much better. One of the Welsummers and a Faverolles and the Coronation Sussex also exhibited symptoms. Hopefully all will be well in the next few days. About to start work on my flash new pen this week. Doubling down on the fox proofing. One was in the paddock this evening. Hope everyone is well. Cheers.

Update first on BB, He's drinking and eating fine and after a trip to the vets on Saturday because he still wont come out of his house they believe his feet are just sore from the spurs coming off. They couldn't find any sign of infection but we have him on an antibiotic as a precaution. Poor little fella looks really sad but i hope he will make a recovery in time.
Have my first lot of Marans for the season and a few more Belgian eggs due to hatch in the next couple of days.

Here is a picture of our new little "Fluffball" as the kids have named it. (Yes the kids name all the chooks)

It is possible that Goosebump is actually the mum, because she hops up and lays an egg there then rolls it under Loveheart every day, which we then collect. We were away for a while and Loveheart went broody on this shelf in the shed in our absence, so we left 4 of the more advanced eggs under her, Fluffball is the first to come out. Cuuuute!

Hi everyone. I'm looking for some advice please. My Barnvelder is going down hill. Not responding to the antibiotics. Worming up to date. Cocci recently treated. There hasn't been any mucus or discharge and when the bird sneezes it has always been a dry sneeze. She breathes with an open beak, and has a discernible wheeze. I'm thinking fungal. I had a suspicion I may have purchased her, and two other birds late last year, from a facility with fungal problems. Any advice appreciated. Cheers.

No other birds exhibiting symptoms. Pen has some dust, no dampness. Feed & water containers cleaned daily. The bird in question has been symptomatic for roughly 2 1/2 weeks. Thanks.
