Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Teila - ... you did wonderfully well to get the nomination in the first place.   Congrats on that alone, even though you didn't win the top award.   Great acknowledgement of your good work.

Love the 'giraffe'  you brought home for your husband to enjoy !!  :lau

Fancy - Sox sounds like one remarkable and easy going cat.   And to be with you every day during  your illness was wonderful - animals sure can have some beautiful empathy.

Locknest4 .... So sorry to hear about your Mum's problems.   I hope whatever the type of break to her back, can be ultimately mended and that she recuperates fully.

I do hope you can solve the problem for your chicken.   A little oil might help remove the dark matter around her vent.  It might be old dried blood ?

Fancys' suggestion is most likely right - a prolapsed vent

But if she has had an egg half in half out or broken on it's way out .... and chickens being inquisitive - if the egg was broken at all, unfortunately other chickens may try to eat from around the vent, and therefore raise blood and infection, with their pecking at what they consider food.   ....  ( I read recently this can happen )

That is a horrid concept I know ( apologies - hope it has not offended anyone ) .... but does anyone know if it is true ? ... that flock birds can do this ?

Nice to have you back online Annie. Yes animals have feelings but I guess that's no surprise to you.
Teila your birds are just re adjusting after the loss of a flock member( all be it a delayed reaction )
If she becomes too oppressive I'd remove her for a time and then re introduce her, if not put up a petition so she can see but not touch.

Welcome back Anniebee! Sorry to hear about your gout.

Yep, it would be sad for Crystal to have to go which is why I am trying the attitude readjustment. But no chance she is going to be allowed to keep LuLu confined to the coop; that is not fair either.

Anyways, she is back with the flock at the moment, free ranging, but if she plays up, back into solitary she goes. Hubby is on standby with a water pistol and if Crystal so much as looks at LuLu [his baby girl

] he will not hesitate to shoot

Fancy I had not thought of that. It is over 6 months since we lost KiKi, could that still be the cause?

As I mentioned, she passed Blondie on the order but does not pick on Blondie; once Blondie submitted, all over and done with. LuLu has obviously submitted because she now runs away from Crystal and hides in the coop, not fighting back. Crystal has no reason to constantly pick on her?

I was telling myself that it would be OK in a couple of days but it is not and Crystal is not letting up.

I can only hope that Crystal aspires to get to the top cos next up is Dusty and I am pretty sure Dusty will adjust her attitude for her

Sorry to hear about Crystal playing up again.   ... time in jail might help ... or if you have room - just a separate small coop and run for her, until she gets over herself !!  Would not like to hear of her having to go on Gumtree.   That would be very sad.

And yes, it IS nice to be back -  but a painful at the moment, as I have gout in the right foot - and that is a pain I wouldn't wish on anyone.  Have to rest it a lot ... so my 'putering is limited at the moment.

(edited to add : )

Jessbonnitcha  .... those are some beautiful cockerels you have there.

sjturner79 ....   yes, good luck with the new bubs coming along.

To all who have lost pets.   I too have kept bowls, and have always buried my beauties with one of their favourite toys or for cats, their blanket.  ( all in the back garden except one who was cremated and remains inside in a beautiful carved box ) ....  They all live with us forever, in our hearts.

Luckys'Mum .... really aggravates me too, when I hear of monster humans being called animals.   Just wish people would think a bit more carefully.  It's always an insult to animals.

Cheers all ....

Yes in nature chickens will indeed do that , and then the hen will die from the damage.

I have also lost hens to complications from a prolapsed vent that I didn't notice. Hopefully lock nests bird makes a full recovery.

Not sure if she is laying, will find out now as she is in quarantine with her own little coop. Thank you for your reply. Will get some of the recommended wormer from the local produce store

I would treat for prolapse. First thing to address is calcium. Calcivet is the easiest way to administer calcium, you just add it to the water. Prolapse is a symptom of calcium deficiency .Then wash the area thoroughly, dry and dab with witch hazel(astringent ) , then coat the entire area with anusol haemorrhoid cream. You need to do this at least once a day. Keep her in a darkened room to prevent her laying and exasperating the problem.

Teila I love the Giraffe. What a good idea. Paul knows how much I want an Alpaca (the backyard is too small), it would be funny if I could find a stuffed Alpaca.
I hope you sort out Miss Crystal it would be dreadful if it came to bloodshed. I love the water pistol. When I turn the hose on any that are free ranging head for their coop.

Anniebee Sorry

I don't know if anyone can help I just cracked open a little egg to use for scrambled eggs it was full of blood, there was a yolk and a black lump about the size of a baked bean.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

I have not experienced one myself but have seen some pretty gross egg pictures.

My understanding is that it is normal and caused by a small tear in a blood vessel as the egg is being processed through the hen's oviduct and can be accompanied by fleshy bits which might be what that black lump was.

Did you take a picture?
