Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I knew there was something I had forgotten ... should have posted this at the time ::

To LuckysMum - my condolences to you on the loss your little Maran.

I remember she perhaps was not as strong as your other chickens, and the heat got to her.

Apparently, many chickens can succumb quite quickly to heat stress.

Merry Christmas All :frow

Soooooo, what are we all doing to keep our chickies cool in this heat? My girls have lots of shade, plenty of dirt to dust bath and lay down in, have a wadding pool (in case they feel like a dip lol) and a pergola to shelter under. I thought about putting a sprinkler on for them but someone once told me that they could steam from the inside out if they get too much water under their feathers...

Wagga is 39 degrees today

What do other people do to help their girls?

When it gets to 40c and above here i have sprinklers i turn on. In the main pen it is on the roof and it cools it down enough for them. Most of mine will just go and find a tree to hide under.

Fizzybelle Blondie and Esme look so much alike :love Finished! :D Trifle, Cherry Pie and a Pumpkin Pie for the American in the family ;) I am really disappointed with the Cherry Pie; I underestimated the amount of pastry I would need and did not have enough left over to do the over/under lattice and the lattice is too thin. Oh well, hopefully it will taste good.
Maybe i should pop down to your place at Christmas time . Pumpkin pie seems such and odd thing to me and i'm not sure if i would want to make a whole one incase i hated it but would love to try it,

Happy Boxing Day Morning .. Great pictures. I was at mums south side brissy for most of the day. Blue skys when we left here and once we hit the motorway down it came and rained for most of the day. All my brissy family members where complaining about the rain not me i was was having a ball walking on mum soft green grass in the rain

I'll try to get pictures later but one of my pekin mums had 2 babies yesterday. She had hidden down beside a tree that i could reach behind in their pen. Yesterday out she comes with 2 babies. Now to hope she keeps them away from the snakes. We have had alot of snakes about this year.

Sounds like you had a ball. Our daughter has moved to Launceston to start her nursing degree and the unit she is living in has cement and pebbles. When she came home the first thing she did was roll in the grass. The dogs took that as invitation to play.

Hello everyone just joined up looking for answers for broody hens. I'm learning all the time. I have a Pekin bantam gone all broody at the final stages I hope. It has made me realize how dedicated these chickens are. Love them

Good morning folks

Fizzybelle careful they do not think that the shopping trip and subsequent treats is going to be the norm for 2017

Mini vent time .... Remember the last time there was a cat fight next to the coop I lost KiKi .. I went out in the morning to check and she was dead on the floor? Now, I have no proof, but she was fine the night before when she went to bed .. cat fight .. she is dead .. I believe it could have been fright.

So, at 3AM, after once again being woken by screaming cats from h*ll, I am outside with the torch to 1. Shoo off the cats and 2. Ensure the girls are not too terrified when I bump into my neighbour in our back garden, frightened the bejesus outta ME! Anyways, after securing her rather badly beaten puddy cat who was definitely on the losing side, she thanks me for my assistance .. I grunted and nodded but was actually thinking "Hey Lady, I am out here checking on my chickens, take your cat and get off my property". As she walked past our front door, Syba was on the other side, peering out at her [also apparently not impressed at being woken] and she says “Oh, you have your cat inside?” To which I replied “Yeah” but was thinking “Yeah, you might wanna try it one day .. you know, keep your cat under control so neighbours are not up at 3AM exchanging pleasantries when actually wanting to punch you!"

Fancy Oh to have lush green grass without the huge water bill would be great. At least the weather is not too hot. Not like other parts of Australia.

Plenty of great advice here.

Teila If I was your neighbour I would be embarrassed, they should be locking there cat up, not fair on the cat, not fair on the neighbourhood.
I'm sure my neighbours cat is out all the time, it makes Bear bark all hours of the night. He's protective of his feathered girls.

I hope everyone has had a safe and happy Christmas.
