Man that's hot. It's 9 degrees here and raining.

That sounds like heaven

Thanks for the help! My welsummer hen is doing a little better today. She is opening her right eye now when she is walking, but her puple is a greyish colour. She keeps trying to climb up onto my lap.
Her poop is clear and watery. I've bought a feed replacement called 'Avi-vital', its a liquid that i am adding to water and syringe feeding her. Also been feeding her some sugar water.

What worries me is that she is rotating her head and neck back and forth at times, i have my fingers crossed its not mareks(if that is a sign?).
ALSO she has a round egg-shape under her bottom, i soaked her yesterday in warm water for 20 mins and will do the same to night with some epson salts.

She isn't a happy hen right now. Her name is Choko.

Ugh yeah you won't get actual cold water from the cold water tap until winter, which is so helpful then. I might look at a mister system for next summer. Tedious going out to hose all the time. Is there a drop in temps on the way for you soon? 45 is just insane, glad you all got through it.

Dear god, from 11 to 3 I had the five of them inside. Overall, pretty good. Beatrice had to lay an egg so I watched over her. She'd been screaming until then, I was trying to figure out what she wanted. She quietened down afterwards, but still was noisy. She was just a constant handful, and monopolized my attention. One little bird, so much frustration! Chickens are definitely outside animals, but it was cute seeing her and Esmé sitting on the back of the chair (they flew out of the playpen like five minutes after I set it up, so a towel on the back of the chair suited them fine). Temps are forecast for the high 20's, low 30's this coming week, so that's an improvement. No more heatwaves!

Yes only meant to get to 37c tomorrow.

Do you think she is ' shifting ' her crop ? Birds will do this if they have a crop impaction. If she has an egg stuck that low, best pop her in an Epsom salts bath and put on a glove and do an internal exam. Is she drinking a lot of water ?

How do you know if she is shifting her crop?? I haven't had a problem like that before so i don't know how to check for it. Yes she is drinking some water but only when you put her beak into the water.

satay sorry to hear your baby quail drowned. I hope they are all happy now you have company for the quail.

I can’t believe the heat you are all having in the east. We have been low 20’s the last few days. We’ve had heaps of rain the rivers are flooding they are closing off roads. The weather we are having just doesn’t happen here very weird. We had strong winds last night we had to tie things down and move stuff. My son rang me last night his trampoline had landed in the neighbours tree, he rang 10 minutes later it was now in the neighbours pool. He got it out today. They had to dismantle it to move it. They were totally amazed that the wind had picked it up and thrown it that far. My son is 125kgs and a body builder he lifts enormous weights and the 2 men couldn’t lift it over the fence. When I went there this morning the neighbour on the other side had some old sheets of ply sitting on some brick piles out the front they didn't move an inch. How weird is that?

I really feel for all of you enduring the heat wave. I’m so glad we have aircon. Satay I don’t know how you do it.

Or any one else without aircon in 40+ degrees. When my oldest was a baby I used to spend the day at the shopping centre because it was too hot at home.

Fancy I love the photos of your Broodies I agree with Teila definitely a calendar worthy photo.

Teila I hope you hear soon about hubby’s job. The waiting and guessing must be driving you mad.

jessbonnitcha I hope your welsummer is doing better. Congrats on the wins at the Nowra show.

Susan Hampshire I hope your Hamburgh is doing better, poor thing.

Fizzybelle I can just imagine your girls not staying in the playpen. I don’t think mine would either, they don’t even stay in their run.

It's an hour drive to an airconded shop out here unfortunately. I generally like heat over cold as most will tell you but this last 3 months has been awful, We only dropped to 33c over night and the humidity this morning is woeful. Fingers crossed for some rain today to finally cool things down a bit. All my animals made it through ok. I had to put a frozen bottle of water in the brooder yesterday.
