Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Bugger Ash about the eggs but looks like you have some lovely babies there. I will be interested to see how you go with your rcom. I just love mine and with my own eggs i usually get over 90% hatch rate. I got another 15 baby quails last night from a lady at minden. So now my five originals have some mates. Gosh i can;t get over how much the orginal babies have grown in 4 days compared to these little guys lol.

No below freezin but shocking winds and a good amount of rain yeserday. Does anyone on here know someone or breeds themselves welsummers? I ordered a dozen thinking i would get a dark eggs layer like on the net, realizing not all lay real dark eggs but a variance of dark. Well the eggs that arrived today are really light. I would say the darkest egg is ligther than an australorp egg. Am i being a noodle and the aussie welsummers don't lay dark eggs or is something a miss here? Some of them look like young pullet eggs too and not proper layers.... bugger... I saw pictures of her stock but never thought to question the egg colour.

They should be dark.

Thanks Sam. I thought as much. When i sent her a message to say they had arrived and some were broken she never replied. If i get a chance when i candle at day 10 or so I will take a picture of the egg colour so I you can see how light they are. Some look almost white.

Whoops I placed my message to you guys in wrong place- Have copied it here now
Hi all, haven't been on for ages. As my last chicks are now 6 months old & out of nine, 5 are roos!!! I needed to extend the pen. Although they free range each day, I wanted to be able to keep them penned when needed and particularly as the young hens start laying. I designed the addition so I can have 3 seperate areas if required and can free range one area at a time if I want to. A series of hatches that can be closed to seperate works really well. We built around the remains of a Yasi tree and they love that. I will add some more branches and bits soon as it helps sort out scuffles.

Hey qld chook. I love the new pens. well done.
My quail are all going well. I can't get over how much they have grown in a week they are huge already lol.

Hi Satay, keep posting photos. Do they go thru the ugly stage that chooks do? the SIX!!!!!!!! cochin (well 5 plus one Cochin x Arac) roosters are starting to crow but only one serious fight (5 hours) even with hose drenching. There was no blood and I really wanted a pecking order established from that bout which it was. Pretty distessing to watch but there were free range so one could have taken off for awhile if he had the sense to. So peace reigned again the next day with one firmly in its place.
I LOVE my extension, my coffee place in the morning, my wine place in the evening!

LOl Iove that idea of your drinking spots. Spent 30 minutes this morning sitting with my cuppa watching the baby quails and mumma bantam have their first time on the grass. It makes ya giggle cause they get so excited it is like letting a child loose in a candy store lol. Will try to get some updated picks this arvo when J gets home from school. My phone is that old i don't have anyway to contect it to the pc when i take pics. Guess that will teach me not to knock a full can of pepsi max over my new phone 2 weeks after you get it on a 2 year contract  (never done that before and hopefully never will again lol)
